jiffy stand question
#22
2002 Road King FLHRCI
I am having this problem with even a new spring will NOT secure the jiffy stand to the frame.
The stand drags and scrapes the ground when making left turns.
I have replaced the spring a couple of times and it makes no difference it still does not snuggle up to the frame.
The method I use to replace the spring is as documented in the H-D Service manual.
The rubber bumper is in place as it should be.
I can push it up to the frame where it should be but it drops back down right away.
It acts like the spring is slightly long but the last spring I attempted to install came from a sealed package with a Harley logo on it. Part number 50112-99.
I have not stretched the springs nor modified them in any way. ( have several springs from several attempts).
Can't figure out what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you using the correct jiffy stand?
Could there be damage to the jiffy stand itself?
Could there be damage to the mount?
I'd check into those possibilities...

Back to the sidestand. So the side stand is being pulled down by the spring now? Look at the sidestand mechanism itself. the stand itself, and probably the mount are worn and allowing too much movement. Pull it all apart and inspect. Provide photos of both is you see nothing.
I have seen stand wear out in 10-20 years. None of mine were worn but I keep my jiffy stand assembly lubed with high temp, waterproof, grease. Some folks use anti-seize, but I find that messy.

Rubber was on the jiffy stand and ok (2013 eglide, 50000 miles) so I replaced the spring. Problem solved. I wasn't aware that the spring could wear out. My bad. But ...you learn something new every day...if you aren't careful. I'll be picking up a new spring for a spare next time I'm at the dealer. Thanks again for the help.
Here's a video on how to do it easy.

I keep a couple of extra springs in my toolbox. They are a wear item for me.

ETA: yup, just checked - spring installed wrong, which probably explains why he has to change them every 20k miles.
