I broke the cage off the bearing, then tightened a bearing splitter to the cone, set the splitter on the arbor plates of the press with the tree and stem hanging below the plates, and pressed the stem out of the cone.

"Just" lubricating the steering head bearings involves removing the fairing, the dash panel, ignition switch, top triple clamp, and dropping the forks until the lower bearing on the steering stem is accessible...
