1.Still can't get a straight answer if just changing mufflers on an 08 EGis ok. One dealer I go to says no problem the other one says, no, you can burn the motor up, to lean. Majority here say no problem but still makes me wonder if I should wait until everything is available. I hate whisper type mufflers, I like a bit of rumble.
2. Some say adownload and AC is all ya need with different slip ons, some say ya need a tuner to do it right.
3. Some say you need a dyno if you get the tuner, some say not neccesary.

WTH does Harley Davidson say about these everday questions, if someone just wants to a bit more rumble and a few hp as a bonus?

 

if you get the HD SE EPA compliant slip-ons: no tune is necessary. Depending on who you talk to (everyone has an opinion), aftermarket or non EPA compliant SE slipons (such as SE IIs) may or may not further lean the AFR out.

The HD downloads are designed for EPA compliant add-ons using HD parts. Going to a high flow AC, such as a SE or AN BS will lean the AFR out.

The true test, regardless of everyone else's opinion, is whether you are leaning out the AFR mixture. The 07s and 08s run pretty lean stock from the factory.

My advice to you, since you are the one who will pay if you fry the engine, is to check the plugs after you have made a change, unless you are running the HD EPA complinat stuff. These slip-ons apparently aren't much louder than what you aleady have and likely will do little for increasing the performance of the bike.

If you want to do it right and ensure that you aren't damaging the engine over the long run, use a SERT, PC or similar fuel management device. Richening up the AFR will reduce the heat on these new models and provide a bit more HP. Dyno it to max out the HP and help the heat issue.

I went with AN BS, V&H Ovals and dyno'd theSERT I installed, and the bike screams and the heat ain't and issue. Mileage is in the high 30s to 40s riding two up.

 

For what we have to pay for these bikes now days, looking at what it would cost to fix, I'd wait til you had everything.

 

Well I can definitely tell you what HD says about this: "It may void your warranty". That might be different than what your individual dealer might say. But HD's official position (as expressed in the P&A catalog and out of the mouth of my dealer) is that it "may void your warranty".

 

When they first released the '07's - same thing happened

Dealer would Not install any mods stating "It will void your warranty"

3 Months later they were installing SE mufflers... 3 months later Most aftermarket slip-on mufflers... The sometime in FEB they started selling & installing some sip-on mufflers, SE air Kits and Download..

 

I rode mine 5000 miles with just slip on SE muffs on my 04, no problems. Plugs look good. When you change the air cleaner, do the down load, or get a PCIII/Fuelpac/whatever. I wouldn't do a dyno for a stage one. True, the dyno will get you gnat's **** close to "perfect," and you will know exactly what you are dealing with, but a handheld will get you close. It's not like the engine is going to blow up if you are running .1% A/F ratio different. I won't do a dyno until I've done heads, cams, big bore, the whole enchilada. Mmmmmm.....enchilada

Yeah, my Standard is due in this week and been going nuts deciding on what slip ons to put on (not SE's). Now I think I'll just wait and run it stock until it's broke in and everthing is available.
I really don't want to put the bike on a Dyno, I hope they can get close with an SERT only.

 

You have to takeeveryone advise and then do what you feel comfortable with after all it is your bike and you are the one who has to pay to fix it. I say it is ok without a remap, but then again it is not my bike. A remap would make it run cooler, that would be a big advantage.

My dealer installed V&H ovals on my 08 Ultra when it was on the show room floor and has other touring models with the V&H's on them.I have not had any issues with my Ultra 500 miles and counting.

 

On my 07 I told my dealer I wanted no issues with HDon my add ons.They had me put on the SE slip-ons, AC, and done a download. Bike runs cooler,better preformance, and the milage two up is 40 to 45. Got 11,000 on it so far this summer and love it. I think alot depends on the dealer and how reliable they are.
