If you wind up in North Woodstock, New Hampshire(1 town away from Loon Mountain-Lincoln NH the west end of the Kancamangus Hwy), make sure to ask for "Govonis Italian Restaraunt)....good chow and a waterfall out back....have fun!

If you can do Rt 22 up through New York for a while, and then come over into Vermont on Rt 9 through Bennington it's a fabulous road. Or, you can come into Western Mass on Rt 2 over the top of a beautiful mountain into Williamstown where Williams College is. Then go north on 7 into Bennington. Then go east on 9 from Bennington to Brattleboro through the Green Mountin national park.. and then north on Rt 100 through the center of Vermont. Rt 100 is f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s and not to be missed. Take 100 through to Killington and then take 107east to 120 north to Rt 302. Take 302 east to Wells River and stay at the Wells River motel. (Great place, clean and inexpensive and nice town.)
Also have breaksfast at the P&H Truck Stop at 302 and 91 in Wells River. Have the frnch toast, on their homemade bread.. before you start the day. Take Rt 302 E to Rt 112 into New Hanpshire.. that's the Kancamangus going East. Then stop and have lunch at the place the guys above mentioned.
If you need a guide, let me know when you are coming through and maybe I can meet you and ride along. Whatever you do, try to catch Rt 100 in Vermont.

I'm glad to know that some out of staters are enjoying our roads. I have travelled all over the country; I still love the relaxed pace of old NE roads.
If you wanna see some moose, consider Route 16 from West Milan north all the way into Maine on into Ranglely.
Some seriously BIG wildlife on that road north of Errol, NH. Take it easy. Feel free to email me for some great northern NE roads.
In Vt. Takt the Ferry accross from Essex NY to Vt. Beautiful 135 mile long lake Champlain.

I agree with OldHippie, Rte 100 is a good ride through VT. If you're taking Rte 9 west in VT, you can get on Rte 100 north in Willmington, a left at the second traffic light.
When you get to the intersection of Rte 100 and Rte 4 take a 5 mile side trip on Rte 4 EAST to the Long Trail Brewery and Visitors' Center for lunch. It's open seven days a week, has a very good lunch menu and includes seating on a patio. When you're done, head west on Rte 4 and back to 100 and continue OldHippie's itinerary.

just some suggestions, there are little out of the ordinary from what's already posted. If you're traveling to New York around that area in the Adirondacks, during labor day week there is a national Harley rally going on at the same time in this area. It will make finding rooms exceptionally difficult and expensive. Also beware that school starts during the same week! Since the tourist season ends for the most part at this time, local law enforcement agencies will be out trying to bolster the economy if you pass a stopped school bus. the huge advantage of traveling the next few weeks in these areas( except for the rally) is that the traffic will be down! The best rates that I've ever found in New England for hotels and the like were at this particular time. You mentioned lobster, be warned that it seems as of late it's no cheaper there. You need to do a little homework and explore a little bit to find the good cheap stuff anymore. The outlook for weather in this area seems to be pretty good by the way the next coming week. Still pack your rain suits, new England rains can be quite cool. also around Conway New Hampshire, is a great place to take a train ride to Crawford Notch. I think your father would really enjoy that, the history of trains is quite big and this particular town. And of course on the backside amount Washington is the Cog railroad. Climbing Mount Washington on a motorcycle is quite an experience but not for beginner! Most of it is in dirt and gravel roads, and depending on the weather this time a year
