Default Found a piston crack

I’m here at the dealer for 70k service. I was just informed that one of the pistons has crack on it. It’s from outside in halfway across. Dang it.

2016 FLHXS. 70,000 miles.

Initial quote of $1800.

Well….dang it.

Compression test : 180 front cylinder and 120 rear.

Rear has the crack.

Don't let them just put one new cylinder and piston in for 1800... my .02.

Good time to go aftermarket - a big bore kit.

hed already has 103, I guess could go 107.

I would more .010 over if needed.

Curious how they caught it. MDo they normall do a compression check or look at the top of piston?

Hell of a good service department if they scope the cylinders during a service, now that is a full service if you ask me.
Good that it was caught before it destroyed the lower end and valves by fragmenting.

My bike was burning oil so I had asked them to check spark plugs and put a scope to see what’s going on in there.

I doubt they would have done that during regular service.

FWIW- I went from a 103” to a 110” on my build from Hillside Cycle.

I would check out all your options before committing to the dealer. Talk to some Indy's as well. Get a detailed estimate for both parts and labor. With your mileage you should have the lifters, cam chain tensioner and crank run out checked as well.

You might also think about your big bore options.
