Oil Change issue
Hey all:
First let me say I've changed oil on many bikes. However, this is my first Harley. I changed the filter and the oil. I put the bike on my sears jack. However, I was able to put in only 3 qts. and I am at the middle mark on a cold check. According to the manual it is full like this on a cold check. I did check theoil level on the Jiffy Stand. Did I need to have the bike in a different position to drain the other quart (manual says capacity with filter is 4 qts) it was level on my sears lift. I was only able to put in 3 qt without what I would think would be overfilling. I always put in less at first on any oil change to check the level and fill the remaining as needed.
What if anything did I do wrong?
Thanks for the help.

Not sure about your 07 but my 05 oil is checked on the jiffy stand . Check your manual or somebody here with an 07 will let you know.
Also run it for afew seconds, shut it down have a cold one while you wait and then recheck level. (this should let the filter fill up).
You are right that cold level should be half way on the stick, but on mine its checked on the stand.

RE: Oil Change issue
Typically some oil hangs in the filter (not easy to drain the filer) and some hangs in the engine pluming so once drained it usually takes about 3.5 quarts to refill. If the bike wasn't fully warmed up you'll get less out too. There are expensive devices you can buy that allow 100% change by dumping oil from the return line while the bike is running until the oil runs clean.
