4 quarts engine oil,oil filter,3 quarts of oil in primary and transmission. 3 orings 1 primary cover gasket. 5 primary cover screws. Oil disposal fee. Bike wash. Probably about 300 by the time it's done.

Are they taking the primary cover off? Why are they replacing screws, and 5? Are you thinking derby? My years it is an oring. Why would you replace screws?

I reuse primary gasket, but a dealer probably doesn't. I also reuse derby oring, for decades. Never change out screws unless rounded.

I am no sure how bike dealers are. For my truck shop fees have nothing to do with oil. Just a fee to cover incidentals.

Yep, me also. 35 years, 3 Harleys, EVO, Twin Cam, M8. Never replaced a derby “print-o-seal” nor that giant oring.

Caveat: I know that to many of you $300, $400, $600 is just chump change. I do very well myself, but I HATE paying people to hopefully do what they're being paid to do.

Since it was my first-ever HD, I got my RK's 1k service done by a dealer and paid five or six hundred for it. Got it home, whipped out the calibrated torque wrenches, and found almost all the "critical" fasteners not even close to correct torque (the handle bar clamp screws were just over finger tight!). I've done every service since (5k, 10k, 15k, and 20k), including oil analysis by Blackstone Labs and paid the following:
  • 5 quarts (M8) Amsoil 20W-50 - $80
  • Oil analysis - $35
  • Engine oil filter - $16
  • 1 qt Amsoil primary oil - $17
  • 1 qt Amsoil transmission oil - $20
  • 3 O-rings - pennies
  • Primary cover gasket - $6
  • Derby cover screws - $0 reusable
  • Oil disposal - $0 @ Walmart, AutoZone, etc.
  • Wash - $0 in my driveway
Total cost of materials: $174
Labor cost: $0
Knowing the job was done right: priceless

I’m at $135 minus 1 qt of oil and the analysis. Can I afford the $300-$500? I can, will I pay it? I won’t.

I own and have owned many vehicles including bikes and various power equipment and have yet to pay someone to change my oil.
Man, that is a lot of freaking oil changes

EDIT: I lied! in 2020 we rode to Fuel Moto for dyno tunes, and I had them change the oil after they tuned it. So one oil change paid for in my lifetime of engines.

I am cheap. But it also comes down to what are they really doing. I have friend who is indy, he really takes care of his own bikes, lubing all kinds of points. Stuff I should start to do. Do the dealers do that though? Though difference between lube and dirt is time.
