Here in PA if your tag doesn't read, they send you a violation notice with a pretty hefty fine that includes a nice B&W picture of the bike & tag. To "not" pay the fine, you have to fill out an appeals form with all of your EZ Pass info, and attach a printed copy of your statement showing the EZ Pass tag # and proof that you had a positive balance in your account. Like I said... a huge PITA.

If they could just read my plate # from the photo and determine that I am an account holder I would be fine with it. The other problem is, if the tag doesn't get read entering a highway... but gets read exiting a highway.... you get charged the max amount for that road. So where it should be charged 35 cents, since they don't know where you entered... you get charged $5.

I think Im just going to start holding up the lines and paying cash.

Thank God I don't have to deal with that crap!

I'm guessing what happens is there's a sensor in the road (like at stoplights) that, when triggered, will use a low-power radio-frequency transceiver to poll for a card. Probably sends out enough power to energize the card long enough for the card to transmit its identity.

Maybe one of the stoplight magnets is all that's needed to get reliability improvements so far as polling for the card. On the card end of it, may be that orientation is a factor. Probably needs to be more vertical than horizontal or something to get the antennas oriented similarly.

here in PA the sensor isn't in the road but usually above the lane.

Okay, so you just need a three-pound magnet mounted to the top of your helmet!

I have been asking the same question at EZ pass here in NY. Why can't they make one (like the license plate one) here in NY (Or anywhere else) specifically for motorcycles (Discounted rate over cars). I have written to the AMA for help, with no response.

here in Oklahoma we use a Pike Pass. ours works fine from a bike at least mine does i just put it in the windshield bag and take it out and hold it up when i go through the gate. I am not sure if it works if i left it in the bag closed.
I do know if it does not go off in the car where they do have the cameras (not all gates in Oklahoma have them yet) they look at your tag number cross reference your name against the vehicles you own. this way you dont to have a pike pass for every vehicle.
we dont get charged a annual fee for the pass.

I have had my EZ Pass for 3 years now with no problem.
I just hold it up to my windshield and it is read fine, some PA Turnpike readers can be faulty. Just tell them to check the booth your having problems with.
ORIGINAL: tizone

I have had such a huge problem with EZpass on my bike. I tried it forst insie the right saddlebag lid and the thing went dead... maybe the vibration? I hadabout 4 violations that I had to appeal. I knew the tag was dead because after a couple of times I even held the darn thing in my teeth going through and it still didn't work.

So I ordered a new one, and kept it in the pocket of my mesh jacket. The first time I tried it it seemed to work fine. Yesterday I go through and nada. Didn't read again. I don't know if its the tag or the specific tolls I go through here in PA but I am so sick of appealing violations I am seriously ready to just stick this thing to the middle of my windshield.

I hate tolls.... I have an ezpass in my truck and have never once had a problem with it.

I know that there are ezpass mounts but I dont really want anything else hanging off of my handlebars...

Just ranting.
