I run my back wheel up on a piece of 2x4 so all the oil drains to the front. Put 4 qts in it and it's right on the money.

My bike was on its side-stand facing downhill on a floor dropping a couple inches over twenty feet. I have no doubt whatsoever that all the oil drained from the rear tank. I don't know that much about the configuration of the rocker boxes. I know they drain out the pushrod tubes, and with the bike on the side-stand it might not all (however much may be up there) drain out. In any event, I don't think that drainage is to the rear tank anyway. Half a quart in the crankcase, cam box, heads, oil passageways? Probably so.

Gheez ... do you think we make lubing the cables as difficult as an oil change?

I had this very same question,,, but after rereading the manual...
a engine say new or after a complete rebuild takes 4 qt.s
if you do just a oil and filter change its 3.5 quarts,
you guys are adding to much if you put in 4
thats why you get oil out of the air filter.
same as prim'y you only need 36oz's.. I think?
not what the capacity amount says,
read the book,,, the capacity's are diff/more than a oil change amount

When I dropped the oil & filter in my '02 { with a built 95" motor } , at first put 4 qts. in and she would puke oil out the air cleaner. Then if I changed it and only put in 3.5 qts it was always fine, never puked regardless of how hard I rode her . Will soon change them both in my '07 { 1K miles } and plan to again put in 3.5 qts and go from there [sm=icon_quiet.gif]

So the "Full" mark on the dipstick really means "Too Much?"

ORIGINAL: glens

Must be something wrong with mine, then. I changed the oil and filter. Put the 3½ quarts in the tank and didn't need to add any more; it's right at the full mark. Should I be looking for something somewhere?
Glens,

I've read enough of your post's to know that you know the answer to that!

NO you won't be ok with 4 QTS! 3.5 QTS when you change the oil & filter!!!!!!! If at some point you have a oil cooler installed then it goes up to 3 QTS & 20 OZ.
