Thanks, I knew about the 02 crank and bearings, the other things like belt, tire, and lights I did not.
I have a nice 03 and 06 road king classic I will check out this weekend.
about the same mileage, but the asking price of the 06 is cheaper by 3 thousand . Guess he wants to sell

More likely the the owner of the '03 has an inflated opinion of his bike's value....

And:
Year: 2006

IMHO..... Their value is about $400 different based on year/model.... but on bike's that old, their condition and any known (documented) maintenance history would be a huge plus. If the bike hasn't had the spring cam tensioners addressed, that's a $1500 deduction off of the above listed values...

yes, lol. The 03 owner does not have a price to sell.
However, it is a 1-owner, black & silver paint, chrome front end, controls/master cylinder, leather tour pack. I will offer 8k-8200. He has it listed 10,700 with 21k miles
There is no way that guy will get to average retail. I would pay little extra for the HD chrome front end and controls. I also like that 2 tone color that year as well.
Chrome front end MSRP is $699 and the master cylinder is probably around $400
The guy with the 06 just messaged me someone is coming tomorrow afternoon to purchase bike. I can not get there until Thursday. Oh well, it is chopper blue with 15k miles listed at $7500. It had 3 previous owners. Crazy, if I bought that bike it would make 4 owners with 15k miles.
Both bikes are an hour away different direction, I will go Saturday to look at the 03 if the 06 is sold tomorrow.

Only you can decide how much above average the bike is worth to you, but don't forget, it's still a 20 year old bike. Condition and maintenance will be important. Accessories don't affect the price more than 5-10% of the accessory's original value. However if it has accessories you would have to add, then they may be worth more to you.
At 21K miles and 20 years, those spring cam tensioners are overdue for attention if they have not been done already. Make sure to inquire about those and adjust accordingly...
Good luck with your search....

Hattitude,
how many miles and what have you had to replace so far on your softail?
would you feel comfortable taking it long distances? I’ve read posts about some hd dealers not working on bikes over 10 years old.
all the dealers here do not have that policy.
I remember reading about electrical issues on the 03 touring. There is a write about changing to 40 amp maxi-fuse.
in 2021 me and a friend rode from NC to CA. We were gone 2 weeks. I had problems early on into the trip. Bike would crank but no start. This was on a Sunday morning. It finally cranked but it had problems the whole trip. It never left us stranded, just delayed a few times. I swore I would buy a new bike as soon as I got home.
when I got back, I changed sensors to compensator. It has never failed since.
this a 2013 bike and now I am talking about an even older bike to ride/tour
New bikes come with less and more $$
