Oil Temperature Gauge

Before you drop $364 for a new gauge, get a 3/8" MNPT X 1/8" FNPT adapter and mount the sending unit in the oil pan. There is an allen head plug next to the drain plug; remove it, install the adapter, then install the sending unit.

RE: Oil Temperature Gauge
WOW.....great idea. Those words come both from me and the Harley mechanic who received a copy of your message. Seriously, thanks for the idea. The fittings are going on as we speak. I'll use the money saved to go into my Rinehart exhaust budget.
Thanks Again,
Scott

RE: Oil Temperature Gauge
Thanks to all for taking the time to write. Harley is going to do the oil-pan installation with the fittings / adapters referenced. The guy I actually deal with at the dealership supports this idea...he easily could have disputed this approach if money was his only objective. The $364 was the price quoted for taking the old one out and putting in an aftermarket (most likely, I would have done it myself). In any event, let's home for no more leaks.....what is that old joke..."what do you call a Harley that does not leak oil?....empty"
Thanks All

RE: Oil Temperature Gauge
Iclick, Soos, and others posted that installation solution and it sure helped me when I did my installation.
The service department at my dealership hadn't thought ofthis solution either, but didn't like the oil line in the instructions. Their solution was to remove the oil pan then tap it to accept the sending unit. After I did my installation in the oil pan, I shared it with the Service Manager who told me about drilling and tapping the oil pan. Some clever people here who are generous to share their knowledge.
