I guess the only way to check it is to take all the gas out and remove the tank. I would check bolts on the tank. I know this may sound crazy but did you drop anything in the tank like a coin?

There are two main items under your dask. The Speedo of course which is mounted on rubber bushings and the turn signal modulator. It is mounted directly below the speedo and has one bolt in the middle of it. The relay's are mounted on a rubber tab and don't rattle, so that leave the above items. Check for worn tank mount bushings and anything else that might rattle. You also might want to remove the speedo and shake it. It might have something loose inside that is rattling as well.

Hope this helps.

Ride Safe.

I've had fuel caps that rattle like crazy at certain RPM's. My 95 Softail has two, and they both rattle.

check the front of your tank to make sure it doesnt move up and down, mine did so i put a piece of foam between the tank and frame and it cured the rattle. when i recently repainted the bike i put new bushing in and sh*t canned the foam. good luck!!

After you're sure it's INSIDE the tank:

Is it fuel injected? The only spring inside the tank holds the stalk supporting the fuel pickup, and gas gauge sender at 90 degrees inside the tank. It's a pretty small spring though, and I don't know if I'd be able to hear it even if it were loose.

I'd give some serious consideration to taking that thing apart to figure it out. Metal stuff rattling around in the tank could potentially block or impair fuel flow, and the last thing you need is to have your engine quit on you while leaned over, or on the highway, or while far from home, or......

There are other metal parts under the canopy:

- There's a fairly large retaining clip that holds the filter and pump against the canopy.
- At least two oetiker clamps
- Fuel filter

Any of the above could be loose, and any of the above can create problems for you.
