Default Fairing Oil Temp Guage Questions...

Pretty sure I'm going to ditch theair temp guage for an oil temp guage. Rode from Charlotte, NC, this weekend, to Gatlinburg, then back down across the dragon. Beautiful ride, but I couldn't help but wonder what the oil temp was at times (got stuck in traffic in Asheville). So fellas, for those who have installed it themselves, I have a few questions...

1) Does the inner fairing have to come off, or just the outer fairing? I've had the outer fairing off numerous times, but not the inner.
2) I think I read on this forum where someone said they used the power lead to the air temp guage, for the oil temp guage? Is this correct, and if so, is it plug and play, or splice and solder?
3) Once the oil temp guage is in place, and if you go the route of using the second drain plug in the oil pan (which I am going to do), I assume you simply run the wire down the frame (securing it along the way) to the oil pan.
4) Does someone happen have a picture of the adapter needed to tie into the spare drain plug? For some reason I'm brain farting on what this thing should look like.

Is it really this simple, or have I missed, or totally underestimated something? Thanks, as always.

With a 20K + bike, spend another 49 bucks and buy a service manual, and all your questions will be answered!

1. No the inner fairing does not have to come off, just the outer fairing.

2. Not exactly plug and play or solder either. You can remove the leads from the air temp guage and use a crimp splice

3. I ran it along the clutch cable down under the frame and over to the 2nd oil plug.

4. I went to NAPA and bought a brass bushing #3220 x 6 x 2.

Now while you have the fairing off you might consider these options after removing the air temp guage:

1. Swapping the fuel guage with the new oil temp guage so that it is a little higher on the dash for better viewing.

2. Swapping the voltage guage with the new oil temp guage so that it is higher on the dash and above the oil pressure guage and placing the voltage guage in the air temp hole.

I'd gladly spend more than 49 bucks for a service manual if it was available for my '08.

The oil temp gauge doesn't use the the plugs that the other two inch gauges use; instead it uses three threaded terminals (gauge, power, and ground) and crimp terminals for the wires that are secured with small nuts.
