Belt Damage

I was on a Florida trip about 6 years ago now with a riding buddy. He had then about 120k miles on his 09 Ultra. Out of no where he said the bike was bucking really bad. What happened was a section of 18 teeth pealed off the belt. Because he was moving forward it would slip when it went over the sprocket, then catch, then slip and he felt like he was on a bucking bronco. We did not know what was happening and of course were thinking clutch, compensator and even transmission. Trying to get to the nearest dealership and At a red light the stripped section was over the front sprocket and no go. The dealer came and picked him up. They told him that the belt should have been replaced at 80k miles.
If it was my belt it would get replaced, especially if you travel long distances. Just not worth the cost and aggravation of being stranded. We had a $400 dollar tow bill this year just 100 miles from home.
