I was going to get the Standard but opted for the Classic. Reason being the price to outfit the Standard with a radio, engine chrome, and a tourpak exceeds the MSRP of a Classic. Just a thought if you plan to add these items down the road.

The Standard is a "stripper", and meant to entice those with just enough money, to get on a FLH.
But eventually, most owners want the extras that come with the FLHTC/U, and the cost really adds up.
Do the math before you decide.

Ive taken alot of ball bustin in regards to having "an old mans bike". Seeing as Im not an old man and only have one bike an Electra Glide is my choice. It can be fully set up or stripped down for any occasion. Low windshield and seat make for a sharp cruiser. Crank the tunes, set the cruise, kick the feet up and enjoy the ride................

Thanks for the comments, Bill.
Like I said earlier, the problem is that I didn't make a fully informed decision at the time. I don't know what I would have done, the money wasn't the issue, they're not that far apart, it was that I wanted to be able to add/remove the tour pack and for some reason I had the impression I couldn't do that unless I bought the Standard. I will be getting a radio, I found a new on on eBay for $750 through one of their dealers...so I'm happy there.

Mac,
The dealer might have been giving you information about the tour pac because that is what the Motor Company says. It is stated in the catalog, and in the installation instructions that the quick detach can't be used with the Classic or Ultra.
I talked to the service tech at my shop, and he thought it was because of the electrical hookups, antennas, and because the license plate bracket is attached to the tour pac. He further told me that there was no way that it couldn't be made to work on the Classic, and the Ultra if it would work on the others, because they are all basically the same motorcycle.
I, like you, would have never bought a Classic if I thought I would not have the option of removing the tour pac.
That radio will put a smile on your face, especially with the addition of the XM.
Regards,
Bill

I saw a 2002 FLHT Standard the other day that had been painted titanium silver to match the engine case. The guy had painted the frame as well and man it looked cool. He had the shorty tinted shield and it had been lowered about an inch front and rear. It really made the chrome and black stand out. I was so impressed, I thought about getting one and painting it just like that, but my wife really wanted a Road King, and since she's the boss... I may do it next bike. Used ones are where you get a great deal.

Bill,
Well, interesting. You echoed what he told me. I'm very happy with my choice, and we love the bike. We will slowly add the toys, but hey, I'm an American, I want it all, right now, I don't want to wait! Mama at home is better with the waiting, and she is better at keeping the checking account at a good level as well. She's concerned with feeding the kids and paying the bills...

The Electra Glide Standard is $ 4 $ the best deal Harley has. It is the basis for everything else. Ride a Ultra same engine, trans., suspension, etc. The Standard is a rider's ride. The Cadillac of touring machines. My 2003 Standard 35,000 miles. My 2004 Softail 5100 miles. 800 mile days are absolute comfort on the FLT. Old man's machine - NO. Smart man's machine - YES.
