Hi guys. What are some of your techniques when changing your oil filter so the oil doesn't get all over the engine mount etc...? I here that oil is one of the main reasons the rubber in the mount goes bad.

 

I stuff rags around and under it and clean up any that drips right away.

They make some kind of plastic shield too I've seen.

 

When I owned my Road King, I used a heavy plastic no hunting sign as a spillway under the messy oil filter as I loosened it to direct the hot oil.

 

go to walmart or something and buy those cheap thin cutting boards. Trim to length and done....

 

I make a trough out of tin foil each time I change the oil.

 

1-get piece of cardboard out of the garbage about 1 foot long and bend lengthwise
2- place cardboard under filter
3-tap small hole lightly into top and bottom of filter.( i do the bottom one first)
4- let the filter drain onto cardboard and into waiting oil pan.
5-drink beer

 

You might want to put a hole in the end of the filter to drain the oil before removing it.

1. Grab the filter and spin it off
2. Wipe off flange on the engine
3. Put a thin layer of oil on the new filter
4. Spin the new filter on
5. Get the hose and wash it off
6 Ride it dry

Wow, is that the order it's supposed to be done....I mixed up number 1 and 5 somehow I use this method too, except I don't poke holes I just put the cardboard under and begin spinning off the filter then let it sit for a bit then remove completely.

 

The trick I learned here on the forum is two cut up a 2 litre soda bottle. Took a little trial and error the first oil change, but by the second one I had it down on how much to cut the 2 litre bottle. Works well and catches 95% of the oil. I put some newspapers under the filter to catch the little but that gets by the soda bottle.
