Default Brake Light Fuse Blowing

Hi all, I have an 06 Street Glide I picked up used. Not perfectly maintained but decent shape. So it blew the brake light/cruise control fuse a few times. I unplugged the rear brake light switch and it has not blown since. I never use the rear brake in normal on road driving anyway so not a risk for safety. I am going to start chasing down the wiring for a short, but I wondered if anyone knew of a place to start based on personal similar experience?

Thanks, JT

If you disconnected the rear pressure switch and the light comes on when you press the lever for the front it's a bad brake light switch
because all the wiring to the rear brake light interconnects.

THe brake light works when the rear switch h is connected and you press the rear brake, but the fuse usually blows soon after. I went through the wires in the fairing and checked for a short, no problem found there. So I was wondering if anyone has had a short in the rear brake wiring before that was a known point they had issues with.

My buddy had a similar problem on the front. Turned out to be the switch in the master cylinder for the front brakes.

Does it blow when you pull the front lever or only when you use the foot brake? All wiring is common except the 2 switches.

If the fuse only blows when the rear brake switch is used it's most likely a shorted or corroded causing high resistance. Replace the switch
Safety is an issue when one of your braking systems is not working. That 20% of total braking force the rear brake provides maybe the difference between short of something or hitting it.

Are you sure it's the Cruise/Brake fuse and not the Accessories fuse?

Isolating the switch seems like he's identified the problem. Then you look at the schematic and realize the Cruise/Brake fuse goes to the Brake relay and not the switch, the Accessories fuse supplies the switch. which then pulls in the relay and the Cruise/Brake fuse powers the Brake light on the fender and tour pak , The C/Brake fuse also goes to the accessories plug 4A, the cruise module, Roll off switch, Cruise enable on the Tac, and the Cruise on/off Dash panel switch before the relay.

Default Thanks all!

Yes I plugged the rear switch in again and rode around a bit. Brake light still okay and no fuse blown. Just got the schematic, thanks for the pic, and saw exactly what you are saying. I need to go through the tail light wiring and see if there is an intermittent short somewhere. Always tricky finding the intermittent problems.
