Stage 1 and SE Tuner
#11
I put 20,000 on an Evo with drag pipes 30 years ago. “No issues” either when I sold it. I heard through the grapevine sometime later the guy who bought it had to have work done on the top end. Not sure what was done. It was a long time ago. I’m guessing burnt valves from running too lean.
Fuel Moto is one of the most recognized outfits in the Harley tuning world and flat out told me that the ECM cannot adequately adjust for no cat. I didn’t discuss running a hi-flow air cleaner because I wasn’t planning it, but it is conventional wisdom here, not just my opinion, that you can run slip-ons with no tune. But run a hi-flow breather with slip ons, and certainly with no cat, then you need a tune or your bike won’t be able to adequately compensate for the change in parameters.

I talked to a service tech at Red Rock HD here in Vegas and he said the black SE pro street tuner was designed to be used with hd parts only. If i get mine refurbished does that mean I can tune it using different pipes and a/c? I got an 11 RKC Thanks much for any info.

I’ve spent more money than I like to think about playing with these M8’s(countless exhaust changes, 4 different tuners purchased, numerous dyno sessions in 4 different states, yada yada yada…..I’m a dumb ***! LoL) and from my experience unless you just want the look of a different AC then I would leave it stock and just put the mufflers on for some sound. Stage 1 with tuner AC and mufflers will only provide minimal gains. Unless you plan to go further, personally, I would put the extra money on something else and just do the mufflers and ride on.

My experience with the SE tuner when I had an Stage 2 upgrade has not been well. I found it unable to provide me a tune that I eventually junked it in favor of the V&H FP3. The tune provided me by V&H, through their Customer Service hotline made my set-up achieve their peak hp and torque numbers. Incidentally, I had Rinehart 3.5 slip-ons as well as K&N air filter. However, my love for the performance and the rumbling sound of the Rinehart wasn’t completely shared by my wife. She found the latter to be excessive noise.
I had since traded my 2019 FLHCS for the 2021 FLHXS. So as not to alienate my wife ( I love having her ride with me), I am looking for a middle ground. I will limit my upgrade to Stage 1 with again Rinehart slip-ons and K&N hi-flow air filter. Due to my bad experience with the SE tuner, I am hesitant to buy another one for this purpose. Can I have a successful Stage 1 upgrade without a tuner? Or is it an must?
