I have a thumbscrew in place of the stock screw. You just reach in from the side and spin it off with your fingers. Cost about 5 bucks and says Harley Davidson on it. It will help to bend the seat down in the middle as you lift the rear up until the tab at the front comes free.

What does opening the lid have to do with getting to the screw.

Biff,

Opening the lid moves the backrest out of the way and lets you angle the screwdriver back a little. Gives you a better angle to work. Also with the lid up the screwdriver handle may clear the tourpak making it easier to operate
