I took mine off first thing... didn't think about getting caught up in it, just 'old school' MC rider. I'm interested in your point about a cap though. I just have the extra shaft sticking out where I removed it. Is there such a thing? I'd be all -over that.

There is definitely such a thing as a shaft cover for that piece you have sticking out where the heel-shifter used to be. Take a look at the link on my last post (just before your post).
I guess my only question is whether or not that cover is simply cosmetic...or does it help support the toe shifter. The thing is only $13 so I guess I will probably just get it, but I'm curious about the experiences others have had with it.

It might be worth it just to make sure the toe shifter never falls off. Besides looking cleaner.

BTW: Anyone thinking of removing their engine/bag guards for a cleaner look...DON'T!
Those things just save me mucho $$$ in repairs after today's mishap.
That's precisely why I installed them on my SG, which of course didn't have them originally. I removed the heel shifter, so for me all it would take is one slip of the foot at a traffic light. It will happen one day, as I've had it slip several times only to catch in the nick of time.

I would say it is mainly cosmetic and does dress it up. The set screw has locktite already on it just back it out a little and put in on and tighten it up so the set screw is not visible.

Not trying to highjack this thread but ICLICK, is that the stock break pedal on your SG? Looks further forward than stock.

I have that shaft cover and I like the looks I guess if the bolt fell out of the toe shifter it would keep the toe shifter in place I hid the screw down on the bottom and it sure looks a lot better than the splined shaft sticking out there. It has my vote and it is cheap.

the cap is cosmetic. or you could go with a kuryakyn one, it goes on the inside and pushes your shift lever to the outside (so it is mostly a chrome bushing) but it runs 25 bucks. i've seen people run without one, but it just looks unfinished. look at it this way, what can you buy from hd that is ONLY 13 bucks and looks good?

Thanks folks.

That heal shifter is GONE!
I took it off as soon as the bike cooled enough.
I'll hold on to it in case I ever need to replace my toe shifter.

Is anybody who's removed their heel shifter running without any kind of shaft cover for the piece that the heel shifter was attached to?

I like where my toe shifter is positioned so I'm not interested in moving it out any. I justwasn't sure if that shaft cover HD sells is cosmetic or serves a purpose (keeps the toe shifter on).
This is the shaftcover I'm speaking of:http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US
When I pulled off my heel shifter, I bought the HD cover. It is simple, and looks good (IMO). I don't know if it serves a purpose, or not. But, it would seem to me, that if the tow shifter became loose, and started to rattle, the cap would keep it on 'til I get home. I would rather loose the cap, going down the road, that the shifter. LOL Either way, I would suggest covering it up.
