Default Police Seat Rider Backrest

I want a rider backrest for my 03 FLHTPI with the air ride seat. I love my air ride seat, and I've heard too many good things about rider backrests. I went to the dealer recently inquiring about this, and the parts guy took the receiver mounting bracket out of a new (basic HD) backrest package. We walked it over to a Police bike with the air ride seat, and we held it next to the mounting bolts. It looks like it should work. But....the receiver bracket would be visible (and would not look good) and I want the Mustang Passenger seat, which sits on the same bolts that the receiver bracket would mount to.

I've been thinking about going to a machine/welding shop and checking on having a bracket fabricated that would attach to the metal frame on the bottom of the seat and wrap around up behind the seat. I don't know if something could be fabricated that would allow the use of an adjustable backrest, or if it would be set in a permanent position. I've heard that the Mustang rider backrests are the way to go, better than the HD's. Having a backrest attached this way seems to me to be the best choice, as the backrest would move up and down with the seat (and the rider).

Also, I looked at the Protac website ( www.protac.net ). They make rider backrests, and the one they have listed/pictured for a Road King looks like it might work. It appears to attach to the fender rail from each side. I don't like the look and shape of the Protac pad, though. Maybe an oval pad could be rigged to attach to that bracket.

As good as the air ride seat is, someone out there must have a rider backrest in use on/with this seat. Hopefully, someone else will chime in, and we will figure out something that will work.

Thanks!

Doug

I agree with Doug on this one. I too am looking into the same optiions. i am thinking of welding an angle bracket tot he seat frame and installing an HD backrest that can be bolted on. this way the back rest moves with the seat.

The problem with solo seats is the seat has to be manufactured to accept a rider backrest (e.g. Corbin, Mustang, etc.) or the backrest bracketry is visible. If you don't mind a visible bracket (and it will have to be given the police air ride seat), I'd buy the HD bracket and backrest, then have the upright part extended if necessary due to the police seat's ride height. The Hd mounting bracket uses the same two rear fender bolts that secure theblack plastic frame cover on the police bikes. Also, Iagree, the air ride seat is the most comfortable and there are times I miss it on my '04 FHTPI.

love my air ride... I would be interested in a backrest, but it would have to work with the passenger seat.

I found what you all need. Matching basket weave, mounts to existing seat bracket, use with mustange passenger pillon seat $250 shipped
Utopia Products 888-343-3320 Just ordered mine.

In addition they make it plain as well.

I have a 2010 R'King with 2010 Police seat. The material pattern is different and no one makes a matching passenger seat or back rest. So I bought the older solo seat and matching passenger seat. I just mounted the older seat on the newer brackets. So I now have a 2010 seat with all the 07 and older bladder, brackets, air cannister, plastic cover for sale.

Mustang makes a replacement seat with detachable backrest that works with the air ride set up. I put one on my '09 police bike.
