I did a ton of research before I bought my SG. Lots of folks said RG was better. Just as many said SG was better. And same amount said they owned both and they are pretty much the same. So I went with the one that I knew was 100% going to put a big old grin on my face every time I laid eyes on it. I just like the look of the SG batwing better (both in pictures and in person) and I like that everything is a little closer when sitting on it.
Maybe next time I'll try a RG and see for myself.

Find a HD demo ride location and test them both. You will know really quickly which is the best bike for you. What anyone else says is their opinion. You have to pick your own ride, and with either, there are factory and after market parts to tweek any minor dislike that you might have.
I've ridden a RG since 09, had a batwing prior to that. For me it was an issue of leg room. 6'5 and 300. When making slower speed turns, the batwing had limited bar movement, unless I kicked out my knee (batwing - knee - tank). With the RG fairing is fixed, bars are extended, no knee pinch. I am also long armed, so having the fairing and head unit away from me was nat an issue. With the BW if always felt more confined / crowded.

It's not really "aesthetic" but another big difference for me was the fact that the SG had my upper legs actually angled upward from the seat to my calves. After having ridden bikes with relatively "forward" controls (and level or downward-sloping) thighs) for the past 15 years, it made me feel like I wasn't really connecting with the bike. I rode both last Saturday, and the RG came away the clear winner.

I always made fun of the way road glides looked until I started paying more attention to them and ended up purchasing one. I love the looks now and the ride and handling complete the package for me. I'm seeing more road glides than street glides so the word is getting out and this has been confirmed by my closest dealer. Road glides are out selling street glides 3 to 1 around here.
While the SG is a bit neater to look at .. After Test riding a 2018 RG Special convinced me much rather go Function Over Form .. If ever buy another Harley Tourer no question in my mind will be a Road Glide ..
