Default Diagnostic Code Display

Just a simple question.....how do you know IF a "diagnostic code" is triggered? Does it automatically appear in the odo window? ......or......does the check engine light come on and then you must manually go through the steps to access the code(s)?.....or....some other way?

(Everything is fine on my cycle ....just asking to learn & educate myself))

Thx

The engine light normally turns off in 4 seconds after turning ignition on. If it comes back on for about 8 seconds and turns off it means there are
historic trouble codes stored. If it comes back on and stays on it means there are current trouble codes. If it stays off it means no trouble codes.

Like Bingee said plus the security light indicates BCM DTC.

Thanks so much!!.....So IF an indicator light remains lite, THEN one needs to go through the steps to view the error codes in the window I assume.

That's correct. Remember some codes might be historic and not signaling a problem. Others might be current and signaling a continuing fault. The only to tell is to clear all of them out and see which ones return when you ride again.

If you Check DTC's write them down before you clear them.
