Again, I still don't get it. Run below or at the speed limit and you will not need a radar detector. What's your hurry anyway? Cool off time is a chance to spend time with your scoot. Make the most of it and stop and smell the roses so to speak.

Ah ain't bitter - ah jest stated the facts as ah see 'em. YOU were the one moanin' 'bout gettin' the ticket "even though you're a firefighter", an' continue ta bemoan that post after post. If you were 5 over, most anyone would've cut ya slack - but at 15 over, sorry - yer done.

Don't run a radar detector - an' ah'll tell ya a little secret. With the technology out thar today, it's better'n even money that they'll git ya anyways. An' if they DO pull ya over an' ya got a detector, you kin BET there'll be NO slack. That's nothin' personal - it's just that in my experience a radar detector SCREAMS "I speed any time I can!". Jest do yerself a favor, an' slow it down a tad (or learn whar the radar traps are).

Never used a radar detector so I have no input on brands. As a sheriff's deputy, I write 10 to 1 warnings to citiations for speeding . . . writing speeding tickets does not necessarily help get a sheriff re-elected. With that said, I always write a ticket to anyone caught speeding who has a radar detector, I figure their warning is sitting on the dash.

Doppler radar travels at the speed of light (670,616,629mph) unless absorbed or reflected. If the officer has it in standby and targets your vehicle, he will have already locked your speed before you begin to slow down. The typical human reaction time is 3/4 of a second to begin to react to the hazard. Radar detectorsare only helpful if someone ahead of you happens to get clocked, otherwise it is too late.

This being said, out of the radars on the market, Valentine is the best model.

I have to agree with some of the comments above, but heres my take on things, and before I start I make it clear that I have the upmost respect and admiration for military, ambulance/paramedic/doctor/nurse, and fire personnel.

If I stop one of the above, or even a fellow leo I'm looking for an excuse not to write a ticket, but.......

I only target areas of high risk, and the bottom line is that these areas are the wrong place to be enthuastic with your speed. So I guess I am really writing the ticket for bad judgement, as opposed to speed.

Speed does not cause collisions, bad driving/riding does, all that speed does is make the outcome far worse.

I have written tickets for just about every walk of life, including some very senior leos. I have had leos step out of cars stating its ok they are police and trained to drive at high speeds. This attitude gets a ticket every time. Yes I am trained to drive at speeds higher than normal, and I do so regularly in the course of my duty, which because I drive faster more frequently hones my skills. However I also know the law and I am meant to obey it, so if I get caught I would have to just suck it up. It doesnt matter if I am speeding safely in the right type of area, I am still breaking the laws I uphold. I'm not saying I dont speed, everyone does at one time or another. What I dont do is issue tickets when I consider that given the same vehicle, conditions, location, and same amount of driving experience as the person standing before me, I would have happily driven at that same speed. That will get you a verbal warning.

Radar detectors do not work, as stated by the time you react its all over bar the stop thats on its way. They give a false sense of security and are more than likely going to get you tickets.

I know this isnt what you want to hear but the only way to be sure to avoid a ticket is to stay within the law.

I am sorry that you feel slighted by the officer who dealt with you, but it is likely that it was not personal, and I hope you can find it in you to continue to work with those cops you come into contact with in the course of your duty. I suspect that the cop didn't like writing you up, but he acted professionally, and without fear or favor.

I do find the footnote you have added in red a bit insulting, you are not the only person who has a difficult and at times dangerous job to do. But if thats really how you feel I guess its unlikely I or anyone else will sway you.

Well said WB. I agree with what you said.I served as a police officer in the trafficdivision during my 3 1/2 year break in military service. I felt this way, and still do, regarding speeding.

Hey come work over here. Cops don't use radar the roads all have radar cameras. They give you warnings of approaching cameras at 1000 meters on the road sign. Also the radar/gps detector knows where all the cameras are and updates itself.

Also, since bikes don't have front license plates.... do as the locals do

Just not the case. Been using 'em for decades, and years ago, they weren't nearly as effective as they are today. But the better detectors now do work, and I get a couple of miles or more of advance warning when there's traffic control radar anywhere nearby. The Valentine 1 will even indicate which direction it's coming from, and false alerts from business security systems and door openers are all but a thing of the past. It will also alert to radar around corners or over hills, as can the Escort, in cases where the signal source is not within line-of-sight. In my part of the country, the majority of law enforcement agencies have their radar on constantly, not in standby, so that's normally not an issue, but even in those cases where "instant-on" equipment is being used, signals aimed at other traffic serve to give ample advance warning. A blanket statement that "they don't work" is either wishful thinking, or the ignorance that comes from never having used one. Trust me - people aren't spending $400 or more for a device that "doesn't work". I'm not a Valentine 1 employee, just a satisfied V1 user - I own two of them (and an Escort X50).

That being said, I'm the one out there with all the traffic stacked up behind him, because I don't believe in exceeding the posted speed limit, while everyone else seems to think 5-15 mph over the limit is fine. I like 'em to blow past me, because they're good radar-bait.

Just dont use them in VA. Its against state law, but on the other hand, a 50 dollar fine for having a radar detector on board is cheaper than a speeding ticket and points against your license.
