Default RE: Oil Filters

I use the HD black filter and buy them from a local dealer the day before Christmas. They offer 24% off any in stock item on that day. Save a lot of coin. They also sell Amsoil.

Default RE: Oil Filters

After doing the 1000 mile service on my new Road King, I cut the original (H-D) oil filter apart with the intention of seeing what crud it had trapped. What I really learned is that the H-D filter is a top-quality one. It's extremely well-built and was essentially impossible to take apart such that I could stretch out the pleated element to examine it properly. The pleated section, unlike aftermarket car filters I have seen, is not just pleated paper but seems to have a metallic component making it very strong (and presumably enabling it to reliably filter down to, what, 5 microns?)

I'm going to use the H-D filter.

K&N. # kn171-c. Alot easier to remove with the built-in nut on the end
I agree...K&N all the way works great.

Default RE: Oil Filters

I use a WIX brand oil filter on all my vehicles. They make a chrome or black for the Hogs.

Not that I'm knocking oil filters but you peeps who use Fram....cut one open and look at how they're made. Compare them to something like a WIX, AC or other brands. The Fram automotive filters havecardboard-like end pieces the element seems to be glued to and a string tied it. WIX, AC and some others are metal on both ends and no string tied around them. I'm not saying the Fram is inferior, it may have as many or more pleats than the rest, I'm just not sure I'm good with the cardboard-like stuff and a string tied around it?? Some auto parts places have displays of oil filters cut open. Might open your eyes to see what's on the inside of them!
