RE: Dunlop Tread Wear
I guess as the profile of the tireflattens out, the load will be spread over a larger area and the wear rate will be reduced. It just was shocking to me to see that I had burned off 2/32" in 600 miles. I'm 215 lbs., the wife is 115 lbs. and I was carrying a Lonestar T-Bag on my rack. Total luggage load couldn't have been over 30 lbs.

RE: Dunlop Tread Wear
When I bought my new FXRS in 1991 I put 18,000 mileson the factory Dunlop 401 tires. They still had a fair bit of tread left but I was getting ready for Sturgis so I replaced them both. The shop didn't have a 401 in130-90-16 size so they mounted a 402 instead. I got 11,000 miles out of that tire. I went back to the 401 on the rear and got 16,000 milesout of the next one. That said, I'm not so sure that the poor tire mileage is a factor of it being mounted on a heavy bagger. It just might be that the 402, for whatever reason, doesn't last when compared to other tires.

Here in SoCal tire wear is also a regional artifact. Due to high concentrations of ozone in our air, we get about 12% less mileage on our tires. They literally disintegrate in the more corrosive environment. This is the principle reason for our stringent emission regulations as they do affect our health, although 2/3 of our pollution is from "static" or non-vehicular sources. Since the weather is dry here and moisture causes grease to become a problem at intersections, I've stuck with the sticky-but-shorter-wearing Dunlop D402s.
