Default A few questions about the tour-pak detachable conversion kit.

I'm looking at eventually installing the quick detachable tour-pak kit on my bike but I have a few questions before I order the kit.

The kit I'm looking at is P/N/ 53000567A. Found HERE.

The kit comes with lights that attach to the back of the saddle bags which I don't plan on using. I have the saddle bag filler lights installed that act as another set of blinkers and brake lights so will these still work if I install the rest of the kit?

I also want to install the hidden antenna kit, P/N 76000862. Found HERE. so I won't be using the antenna relocation kit.

That makes two items in the kit that I won't be using. if I piece together a kit on my own I'll need to purchase the docking mount, docking bracket that the tour-pak attaches too, the license plate mount and the wiring.

I'm hoping someone can tell me which wiring harness or harnesses I'll need to order if I choose to order just what I need, If what I need costs less than the complete kit, I would prefer to go that route if it saves me money and accomplishes the same thing. One of the user reviews concerns me as well so I'm looking for some clarification. Here's the comment from the review:

"the kit is missing the pod for passenger to plug into and no switch to adjust volume. company says not available for infotainment (rushmore) models. WTF?"

What do I need to order to correct this? ^^

??

I went through this same debacle as well. In the end, I went with piecing together the kit as I didn't want the signals on the bags, didn't want the plate mount that comes with the kits, switched to an in-fairing/hidden antenna, and figured I could try to save some coin.

To date though, and through all my research at the time, I never saw an option that retained the passenger headset connection and volume controls. The only way those are available is with the TourPak installed/wiring connected as the headset connection is on the left speaker pod and the controls are located in the right pod.

I take it as losing the TourPak means losing all that goes with it.

I was hoping you would chime in...

So, the review comment I read and posted led me to believe that even with the tour-pak installed the rear controls wouldn't work with the kit but it sounds like they will so I'm good there.

if you don't mind me asking could you post a link or a list of what you ordered to do your conversion?

Here's what I know I need:

Docking hardware and tour-pak mounting plate (I'm all set here for P/N)
Hidden antenna Kit (All set here too)
Conversion wiring (need the part number)
I'm not sure if I need the license plate bracket that come with the kit? I was thinking non H-D vendor for something a little nicer.

If you don't need everything in the kit I suggest getting the docking kit from ebay for around $100. This is what I went with and its very sturdy, no complaints at all. Im cheap on some things, no way I was paying close to $600 for the kit from Harley.

From there you can piece out whatever else you need and save you're self a ton of money.

I'm all about saving some money where it makes sense...

I've been looking at the non-harley docking kits but I have to be honest and admit that I'm a little worried about the quality of the welds. last thing I want is for the tour-pak to end up in the road somewhere because something failed. I wish I had kept the H-D ones I removed and sold on my last bike but they were chrome.... The H-D ones are very good quality....Wish I could see the ones Ebay up close and look them over before purchasing them.

I don't blame you, I've had mine on the bike for about 2 years now with no issues. The old lady doesn't ride a lot but have never had an issue riding 2 up.

I went with the CVO fender kit, so my experience is slightly different. The CVO kit comes with a new rear fender wiring harness that splits three ways - license plate light, and left & right signals/tail lights. It connects directly to the harness on the bike that the stock fender wiring used since the bike side of the harness already has the signals/brake/plate lighting.

Where did you connect your Fillerz lights?

As for conversion wiring, if you open your TourPak and the lift the lower wiring skirt below the backrest, you'll see the connections. There are two small antenna connections (FM & CB), and 6 pin & 16 pin Molex connections. Simply disconnect those four connections, and you will have to remove one or two from the white clip that retains the plug onto the stock TourPak base. From there, you're good to go to pull the TourPak. HD was smart enough to make those 4 connections quick disconnect just for this reason.

Depending on your Fillerz lights and how they connect, you may not need anything else.

I coiled my harness up under the seat and tucked the ends of the plugs in front of the battery.

I think you just answered my question. I don't think I need the wiring harness at all now. The filler lights connect to the connector under the seat located at the front of the rear fender. It basically just plugs inline and then has two connectors, one for the left side and one for the right that each filler light plugs into.

Once the wires inside the tour-pak are disconnected the filler lights will still work for blinkers and the rest of the wires just get hidden somewhere - makes sense.

Good to know, I'm tempted....
