Smile Converting older saddlebag lids to outward opening

New Here. Ive been trying to search a way to make my 87 electraglide lids open like the 1993s and up. Has anyone come across a way to do this easily? I have an email in to Baggerbags.com asking them if any of their kits can do this. Their site also says they make custom things also. Waiting on a reply from them at this point. Theres pretty much nothing I cant do or modify. Wanted to see if anyone here has done this or anything. Thanks Mike

My nephew is working on modding some 2012 bags to function like 2014 and newer. We live 250 miles apart so not monitoring his progress but he is quite handy.
I will post report if/when he’s successful

Yeah Keep me posted. While I was looking online, I saw someone else say about taking the top section of a newer box with that set up and splicing it to my lower boxes. But I dont have too much experience with fiberglass. Looking online at different year boxes with this set up would fit my bike if it wasn't for that HUGE indent on the right side to clear my battery box and cover. In the end I WILL make this happen. Just trying to get as much info and ideas in my head and come up with a plan.

Wouldn't it be easier to just search for and buy a pair of newer bags? I know the hardware is almost never included. But there is some after market stuff that can be worked on a little and be made to work as good as OEM. I think remodeling older bags would be a lot of work. And probably not work as well.

The early bags ( left side ) have accommodations for the battery location ... It's a bit of a task to replace them with newer bags ... It's been done and Mr. Brown will probably show up here soon with advice

Maddrivermike,

I had basically the same bike back in the day. It is well worth your time to go to the EVO section of this forum and search. I would recommend not spending the time and money to try and retrofit the bag lids. There are multiple threads that will show you (with part numbers/ descriptions) how to reconfigure the battery location of your glide and have the set up follow the 95 and up Glides. This will allow you to get a set of take off bags for 95 and up that will give you the tops you want and have more bag space as well.

It’s a lot easier to do then you’re fearing. Especially if you use epoxy instead of polystyrene.

Ill check into that. Trying not to rearrange other stuff on the bike for this. If I some how retrofit the lids then it saves me from repainting, moving the battery ,ect. Im taking everything into account before I make a move on this. Im not in any particular rush, just seeing what my best option is. If moving the battery is the best way, then cool. Then I can just buy new boxes already set up. Thanks

Do you have a tour pack? If not it's possible to use a tour pack hinge on the front of the bag and add a tether to create a stop. I did this with my shovel bags.
if you want to create a place for your battery under the seat it's not too hard to put Twinkie bags on, cop bags are what i used on the 5 speed dresser.

Yes I have a tour pac. Once Im able to upload pics of my bike to my profile, then Ill get it done. Everybody has been helpful with this so far. Ive worked with epoxy and a little fiberglass like I said, just not bonding two things together. Mostly fixing cracks or holes. I cant keep up with everyone's responses, so Dont think I haven't read them. 😊
