Default CVO NaviExtras Map Update

I am trying to update my maps using the Boombox GTS Toolbox. The problem is I do not get the option to purchase the CVO maps. It only shows the MY20 version for $149.95? If you login to https://naviextras.com and look for maps, they offer one for the CVO at $159.95 and another map, it has the same title except without the CVO, for $149.95. For me, in the Boombox GTS Toolbox, it only offers one option which says MY20. There is no option that says CVO.

I am wondering what the difference is between the CVO version of the MY20 maps is and the standard version of the MY20 maps. I am also wondering why the Boombox GTS Toolbox only offers one version which says MY20 for $149.95. Since the $149.95 price within the Boombox GTS Toolbox matches the cost of the non CVO version on the Naviextras.com website, I assume this version is the non CVO version.

I successfully installed the Naviextras Toolbox and was going to buy the CVO version of the map update directly from their website. However, I cannot get the Naviextras Toolbox to recognize the USB drive no matter what I do. This is the exact same USB drive with the same fingerprint that is recognized by the Boombox GTS Toolbox. Yes, I tried all of typical steps. The USB drive is FAT32, I tried it on multiple computers, I have even used multiple USB drives. No matter what I have done, the Naviextras Toolbox will not recognize any USB drive I use. I am wondering if this is by design and you can no longer use the Naviextras Toolbox.

I tried contacting Harley to ask these questions and they were basically clueless.

is there a difference in the maps between cvo and non cvo? i know the software itself is different, but the maps? i don't know that i would be spending the money on a map update either. there probably is not that much difference in the 20 maps vs the 19, and they are basically still couple of years behind anyway.

you're going to have more accurate, up to date info by using the car play option and google maps or waze.

All I know is you go to the NaviExtras website and click on North America, there are two map versions available for purchase. One says CVO and costs $159.95 and another that has the exact same name minus the CVO for $149.95. I cannot get a straight answer on the differences.

I started on this journey because I wanted to make absolute certain that for the 2019 GTS radios that there is no difference in CVO vs. non CVO maps before spending $149.95. I spent a lot of time, both on the phone and through trial and error, trying to get the answer to this question before spending $149.95 on a map that did not contain all of the features designed for my CVO bike. I hope you find the information below helpful.

All GTS radio systems can no longer be updated using the NaviExtras Toolbox. They must be upgraded using the Harley Davidson Boombox GTS toolbox. They changed something in the way the fingerprint is created that makes it unreadable by the NaviExtras Toolbox. This is why no matter how many different USB devices I used or which computer I tried plugging them into, NaviExtras would not recognize them.

An 8 GB USB drive will no longer suffice. You will need a 16 GB USB device to complete the download and installation of the map software to your USB device. I used a 16 GB USB device and after the installation of the map update to the USB completed, there was close to 12 GB of data on the drive. Also, exFAT is now a supported file system to format your USB device. This is handy to use if you have a USB device over 32GB in size. There are ways using third party tools to format drives over 32GB with FAT32, but I digress.

The Boombox GTS Toolbox will only show a map update such as MY20 and no longer distinguish between CVO or non CVO versions of the map. I have been assured that although there is a difference between the CVO and the non CVO maps for bikes with non GTS radios, this is no longer the case for 2019 bikes with a GTS radio.

This is just my humble opinion but...in my experience with map updates from Naviextras, when I purchased the update for my 2014 FLHTK, it was a total ripoff. The actual map I received was old and not much better than the one I already had...that said...I purchased a map update for my Ram truck and had the same experience, so burned twice (in my opinion), I say fugg Naviextras and all/any "suck you in" to buy map updates that are "who the hell knows" how old or actually how updated they are.

I say, save your money. The whole map/navigation thing on modern vehicles is just a way to squeeze more cash out of us after the sale. If you have an Apple device use CarPlay...If you have an Android, keep wishing the MoCo will get their head out of their *** and do what's needed and add it to the next update.

Waste of $149.00 for that update. Doubt you will see any difference from the maps already on your bike. Probably the same maps.

I live in Northern Virginia and we have had some substantial changes in our beltway and express lane situation in the last few years. Having updated maps to reflect these changes and gaining more knowledge through this upgrade process made the purchase worthwhile to me. I wish Harley would be proactive in explaining when they make sweeping changes to the update process and not force customers to waste their time figuring out the changes on their own. This is something easily avoidable but they just do not dedicate as much time and resources to the technology side of their bikes.

The saga continues. I was able to purchase, download, and install the maps on my USB device. When I plug it into the bike, it is recognized and a message appears that says something to the effect, "Authenticating image please wail. If you wish to cancel, unplug the USB device." On my first attempt, I let this process run for about 30 minutes and this screen remained and nothing else happened. I then reformatted the USB device, created the fingerprint again, downloaded the update from my computer to the USB drive, and tried again. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the update folder is huge so I decided to be a little more patient this time and allowed the process to run for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This same "Authenticating image..." screen appeared and nothing else happened this entire time. In fact, I allowed the process run so long, that the bike shut itself off at about the 1 hour 45 minute mark. I repeated this entire process again with a different USB device and experienced the same results.

I contacted Harley Customer Care and they basically said there is nothing more that they can suggest and recommended I take it to my dealership. I froze my butt off getting it there but I drove it to my dealership yesterday. They basically said that this should be a straight forward process and if I am having these kinds of issues, it is very likely the entire radio is going to have to be replaced. Since I had to buy the map update and was not sure how they would be able to attempt to install the maps without having to buy them, I left both USB drives with them. They are going to hook it up to Digital Tech tomorrow and run a diagnostic on the radio. However, they said even if the radio passes all of the diagnostics, because the map update is failing, they still feel the radio will need to be replaced. They will call Harley Tech Support and see if there are any other options but they are not optimistic.

Stay tuned.
