Default Help!!! Looking at first touring bike - 2015 Road King

Hey all,

My sportster was recent’y taken over by my wife (we both has super sport bikes, but she took my 07 883R on our group ride on Saturday... I don’t think I will be getting it back anytime soon).

Anyway, I am looking at a 2015 Road King Police with 28k miles on it. Bike is completely stock, and looks very very nice. No scratches, missing parts, etc. Bike has ABS and cruise control.

What do you think is fair price for the bike? I know what KBB says, but what would you consider to be a good deal? Seller is asking $9700, but it has been listed for sale for about 45 days, and seller seems very motivated.

Also, is there anything I should be looking at before handing over the cash?

Thanks in advance!

that sounds like a pretty good price to me but you might live where the demand is higher for bikes. a quick check of craigslist for my area showed an 07 road king with 22K and an aftermarket seat for $10,500. the used bike market is flooded an the dealerships have the advantage of getting people financed so it's harder for an individual to sell a bike. 9K would be a very good price IMO.

That price sounds pretty reasonable. If you like it offer him 9500, all he can do is say no. Good luck.

Thank you all for the feedback. It sounds like we will be able to make it work if the bike proves to run smoothly. I may try to get him down enough to allow me to buy at least part of the stage 1 kit. However, I am glad to know that even his asking price seems pretty reasonable.

In my opinion, it's NOT a good deal. First, it's a police model, with 28,000 miles. So it's not a parade bike. It's a service bike. Those bikes are abused by motormen. I'm not saying the officers wore them out, but they didn't play paddy cake with them either. And Model year 2007 was the first year for 6 speed bikes. I had one. I don't want another. Get my drift?
And $9700 is WAY too high for a 13 year old bike, especially a POLICE bike.

Take your $9700 and find a MUCH newer model Road King. Remember, for about $500, you can get a bike shipped to your front door from just about anywhere in the continental U.S. Take your time and find a better bike for that amount of money.

13 year old motorcycle? Careful the bride doesn't want to take over what you buy and you get the Sportster back. The market is flooded as stated. There are better deals out there for less money and lower mileage. Not sure what you mean by "looking at" but never buy something you can't see in person or ride. Sight unseen is not the way to spend your money.

The common problem with former police bikes is that the wiring can get hacked up and may need some TLC to put right again. If you are up to that task, then it is a fair candidate. Pay close attention to any starter lag on hot starts. It has the latest compensator but they are known to loose spring preload with use. Adding a shim pack is not hard, but you may not want to take a part a new to you bike right away. This is a common problem, not just on police bikes. ANY used bike has unknown risks.

I appreciate the response, and would agree if the bike was a 2007. However, the bike I am considering is a 2015 Road King Police model (not a 2007 - my sportster is a 2007 model).

I did look at the bike in person this morning. The seller bought it from a somewhat local HD dealer in the next county a few years ago, and it has been kept in a garage. Bike is completely stock. It is a full black/chrome version, and I doubt that this bike was ever put into a police fleet (as 99% of police bikes in our area are the green and white or blue and white models - I've never seen any cops within 75 miles on black bikes). It is very clean, bags do not have the pucks on the top, and it has a full passenger seat. Bike has cruise control and ABS. Also, it doesn't have the rear tour pack docking hardware that I've been seeing on actual police auction bikes in our area. The bike does, however, have rear passenger pegs (not floorboards) so who knows. I do know the bike started right up from cold (yes, I felt the heads and pipes before he started it), and it definitely sounded smoother than the 2010 Dyna I sold a year ago.

I was able to get him down to $8000. I took the bike for a quick ride around his street (will do a real road test before finalizing), and I love the feel.

Given the price drop, the condition, etc., I think I am going to move forward unless someone here has any more comments that would steer me away from the bike.
