can chain tension - spring or hydraulic

When you see a lot of pitting, its from high speed oil cavitation.
Seen in in the big cruisers. Mine at 30K (my last check) had very little. At 10 years, delrin get oil heat brittle and even the roller chain ones that only wear until the rollers hit and then they roll can break from being brittle.
The non OEM are just white delrin. Problem is you need to be careful removing the rivit and using old spring. Screw that. Harley has them 120 for both. Get the guide for 5 and two new retainers for 3. Ronnie's H-D.
Would also replace inner cam bearings if you don't know how to inspect them. I have a plug and just look close at them. Replace o-ring in pump and check end play.

IIRC 96 engines are hydraulic, 88s are spring. Last few years of 88s the pad material was improved I read.

I don't think so Ripsaw. The divots I've seen were almost invariably rounded and smooth. They look far more like internal air bubbles to my eyes.
I've been around plastic molding some, especially at B&D. Air entrained in the mixing or the injection process are common causes of this, and overheating the plastic can also do it.

Whatever you do, just make sure you swap them when its needed and don't let it lapse. I had an '03 Ultra Classic that I acquired on trade that supposedly had the entire motor redone less than a year before I got it. The tensioner took a crap on me 50 miles outside of Laconia two years ago on the way to bike week and grenaded the whole motor. I would say if cost is an issue the spring ones are ok just check and replace as needed. I wouldn't wish what happened to me on anyone!!
On a good note that's how I ended up with my '11 Classic!! I bought it up in NH!
