Ran over a 2 X 4 Today
I was heading South on Hwy 28 (VA) and was two car lengths behind a car, I wasdoing about 40 mph and all of a sudden there it was, I was riding on the center of the road (big mistake that close). This freaking 2x4 was right there and there was nothing I could do, but get ready to run it over.
I stood up on the floor board and hit it with both wheels. I kept control and pulled over to look for damage. As far as I could see, there is no damage. I did a controlability check at various speeds and some hard brake applications. All went well, so I kep riding and put 250 miles on the King.
Lesson learned here for me, is don't ride too close behind the cages, and if you do, you might want to stay on the left or right side since most of the debri is either on the center line or off on the far right side off the road.

i hit and ran over a 16 ft. aluminum ladder in the middle of a narrow black-top road in mid-mo. last summer. it matched the color of the bleached out road perfectly. a telephone line truck was behind me. i pulled over at a gas station down the road and the line truck pulled in with the ladder in the back of his truck. a perfect inline indentation on both ladder rails from my ultra. i checked everything and no damage! the ladder was perpendicular to the shoulder of the road and extended across the center line. i don't think i could have survived this on anything but a Harley!!

Glad you both fared pretty well, could have made for a very bad day.....
Three years ago, I was heading home to KY from TN on the interstate and was going around one of those National Guard trucks (pretty big one). When I was almost alondside of it I noticed the left from wheel wobbling very badly. I knew something was amiss so I sped up to get on around him and almost exactly when I was passing the tire, it blew out and threw a large chunk off almost hitting me and the bike. I think if I had hung back or slowed I know I would have at least ran over it if not been hit by it. I've always know not to ride alongside or behind large trucks for this reason as it seems they are more prone to this happening since some of them run retreads.
I try not to follow very closely to anything on the road unless it's clear for me to pass. I think my bike has radar and if something, even very small, is in the road, seems like I hit it all too often......

We've got alot of crap to contend with downSouth East La.since the storm. People are still removing debri from their property and all kinds of crap ends up out on the Interstate and local highways. Between the dead alligators, dead pigs and storm debri you just have to keep your eyes open, keep a good distance between you and the other traffic and pay close attention to trucks that are up ahead of you.
There was a bad accident a few months ago involving a ladder falling out of the back of a truck because the ladder wasn't tied down. When the ladder fell out it spooked the driver of the car behind the pickup truck it fell out of, the car swerved causing an 18 wheeler to swerve. The driver of the 18 wheeler lost control, drove across the Interstate into oncoming traffic and hit a car head on killinga mother and hertwo daughters in the car.
The driver of the pickup that the ladder fell out of was criminally charged as being the cause of the accident. Since that accident, I pay particularly close attention to trucks, especially trucks with stuff in the back.

You run over 2x4's in just about every motorcycle safety class offered. Sounds like you handled it just fine.
