May not work for you but something to try...I'm also very conscious of being easier on the shifters now!
Not sure where you are saying to put a shim, got a pic?
I checked the vent, it’s fine, no blockage. I dumped the Valvoline synthetic tranny oil and replaced with Lucas conventional. The Valvoline was like water coming out. Shifting better with the Lucas. Going out for a long ride tomorrow, i’ll See how it does. Indy said it should be much better with the conventional oil in it, rather than the synthetic.

On the attached pic it's between #9 & #39. I had an old rubber spacer (#9) and just sliced off a very thin section with a box cutter, slid it onto the shift shaft then reinstalled the shifters. If your new spacer is too thick, the screw securing the shifter won't slide through the groove on the shift shaft...so some trial and error on thickness may be required. There's now minimal play when I wiggle the gearshift lever (#27) in and out...and no more leak (yet!). Hope this helps; I can try to get a good, actual pic later if you want.

That is nowhere near the shift shaft seal...

The seal being discussed fits into the transmission case, #18 in the illustration.

Understood. And I surmised that maybe vibration in my overly loose shifter linkage was transmitted to that seal thereby causing seepage. Certainly worth consideration before replacing the seal.
