Fuel Gauge has a mind of its own
My fuel gauge has been acting up a lot more lately. I've just kind of dealt with it over the past year or so, but just this week, it really went weird. With about 100 miles on the odometer, the gauge would register full, then do a "lazy" float over to half, then back, over and over again. Hmmmm. So I stopped at my local dealer after work and mentioned it to the parts guy. He said it's likely the gauge itself, not the sending unit. He said there is a resistor in there that just wears out over time. Gauge was about $61, the sending unit inside the tank was about $233. OK, so given that info, I bought the gauge. I'm not quite through that tank of gas yet, but it appears to have fixed the issue. Hopefully, this will help someone else.

It is fixed, can't argue with success. My first actions would have been to separate, clean, and reconnect the fuel gauge plug and the plug under the dashboard that plugs into the top of the gas tank fitting. If the problem were fixed, it was a free fix, if not, then start spending money. Erratic indications always make me suspect dirty plugs or a failing ground connection first, then a component failure.

I never believe my fuel gage....for this very issue. Not that i have problems. I use my odometer as my fuel gage. I track my fuel usage religiously and pretty much know what I can and cannot do.... I get at least 200 miles on a tank. On trips I can stretch to 230-240. I use an app called Simply Auto to track my fuel usage.
