RE: Read This Article From The Miami Herald
I live in South Florida and a couple months ago, there was a segment on the local 6 o'clock news about this kid clockedover 120 mph on I-95 by local law enforcement. They were able to catch up to him at some intersection off the interstate. The reporter must have been right there when they caught him since they were able to capture the conversation between the officer and the crotch rocket rider on camera. The cop asked the kid, "why were you going so fast"? The kid right there on TV answered, "these bikes are made to gofast, whats the problem"?...........If you ever been toSouth Florida, you would know how congested the roads are here with traffic. Not only do the crotch rockets weave in and out of traffic over 100mph on the interstate......so do some cars........and the sad thing......it's not only kids doing it. I can only imagine where this kid picked up his driving habits. This has been an on going problem here since I moved here 15 years ago. Every now and then the cops step up their enforcement to try to catch these guys. It slows down for a couple weeks and then picks right back up. I guess some people just missed out on the common sense gene when they were born...........

If you saw the photos of the sport bike rider lodged in the loading door of a semi trailer he rear ended, you know what that means for her and her kids.

Lucky he was wearing a helmet; his family can have an open casket funeral. It's not good when anyone has an accident, especially on a motorcycle, but these guys are putting the Darwin theory to the test.

Basically a well written article.
But I failed to see the end point in your writing it.
Unless it was to say all motorcycle riding is dangerous.
Yes it can be , but then can so many other activities in life.
At first you were talking about so-called crotch rockets.
Many of us "bikers" feel they are not right for the open roads
and should be restricted to racetracks. But they are street legal.
Most accidents and severe injuries on them come from the person
operating them. Because they have the power and gearing to go fast
they usually do.
Some is from inexperience but most is from stupidity on their part.
Speed and recklessness belongs on the race track and other such venues
NOT the public highway and roads.
Also, many of them are young and showing off for friends, girlfriends etc.
They also fail to wear proper protective clothing that can at least minimize
the aftereffects of a crash.
As these people get older we hope they will learn and become better and safer riders.
But please do NOT lump all us motorcycle riders (bikers) into one category.
There are many brands, models, and styles of motorcycles and just as many types
of riders.
Most of us riders (motorcycle club affiliated or not) are just average day citizens.
Not gangsters out to rob, pillage, rape, partake of illegal substances etc.
We have steady jobs, and families and the little white house with the picket fence around it.
We obey all the traffic laws and drive as cautiously as we can. We have to. Because when a
motorcycle collides with any object the 'cycle usually loses and the rider is injured,
sometimes quite severely and fatally.
Too many times newspaper articles are a little onesided and or slanted against the rider.
When you write an article about a motorcycle wreck please get all the facts you can.
Especially if another vehicle is involved. Many more times than not the other vehicle in
some way VIOLATED the motorcycles right of way (crowded the lane he was in because he
was smaller and narrower, or turned left in front of him, crossing into his path, or pulled into
traffic from a side street or driveway. The normal excuse was "I didn't see him!"
This is all too common.
Most drivers LOOK but they don't actually SEE.
Since we are physically smaller, many times we appear to be farther away and moving
slower than you believe. So always LOOK (and see) TWICE.
And for goodness sake if you do collide with us STOP, because we are probably hurt and
will need medical attention. Besides, it's the LAW, you're required to stop!
For many of us when the weather is nice and permits, our motorcycles are our daily
transportation to work.
For your benefit please contact your local or state chapter of A.B.A.T.E.
(american bikers aimed towards education)
Go to a meeting get to know some of them and go for a ride.
Most of us older "bikers" (45 and up) usually ride large touring bikes. Made for daily
commutes and sunday driving tours around the country, NOT go fast like the crotch rockets
you mention.
Please be fair and open minded in your articles.
[left]We'd all appreciate it. And definitely go try it and see what it's all about befo

RE: Read This Article From The Miami Herald
A couple weeks before i purchased my bike, I took the beginners riding course. I did own a bike about 15 years ago and rode it for 5 years, but felt it was in my best interest to get a refresher before purchasing a 750 lb bike. There was an early 20ish guy in the class who when asked why he was here, answered that his attorney suggested he take the course prior to his court hearing. He owns a crotch rocket and ended up with high speed/reckless drivingcitations that required an attorney. The instructor commented that every class has a guy like this. Made me wonder how many are out there that will never be caught.
Sid, I've seen the thread with the accident pics of the guy in the back of the truck. Maybe they should show thesepics atspecial classes for crotch rocket abusers.Or maybe it should be a rule that before you buy a crotch rocket from a dealer, you have to see these accident pics first.
Before i bought my first bike I witnessed a guy hit the back end of a pickup truck when he couldn't stop his bike in time. He cartwheeled over the truck like a rag doll. His helmet came off and landed in the bed of the truck as his body landed in front of the truck. He was lucky as he picked himself off the street and went to the curb to sit down. I've always remembered that wreck since i was the vehicle behind the bike. It made me a firm believer in the 2 second rule of which i use 3 - 4 seconds behind a vehicle.
