Default Primary Noise

Just putting this out there. It's been a long road of troubleshooting with a primary leak on my 07 RK. I thank Allen for all of his patience with troubleshooting with me. So after a lot of parts, alot of money, it appears my primary leak was coming from the starter clutch. I saw one forum on here that mentioned a primary leak seeping from the starter hole and that's what was wet and soaked after a decent ride. Put in an all ***** starter clutch and so far so good.

Now I'm not sure if I'm just going crazy at this point or it seems my primary is a little noisy. Hot or cold, clutch in or out I hear a whirring noise. Music playing in my ears and my V&H pipes and i dont hear **** so hard to say if it was there before or not. Could it be oil condition causing this ? It looks pretty muddy. I just don't feel like being 500 miles from my house and having the primary blow up my leg.

Thanks for listening, looking forward to input.

Mike

Primaries are noisy. In fact everything about a Harley is noisy. Your probably just listening closer because you just worked on it and what you think is a new noise was there all along. I find myself doing this a lot. Every time a new noise has been because of a real problem, it left little doubt that something required attention.

Yeah its definitely a new noise. It really sounds like it's coming from the starter, possibly traveling down toward the primary. I pulled the primary cover off, nothing broken but I did notice that the starter jack gear isn't fully retracted in. Which would lead me to believe the starter is spinning with the engine running. This shouldn't be happening correct ? That jack gear should not be in contact with the flywheel until you crank it right ? Im thinking something got ****ed up by taking the starter apart. Thanks.

Guess you can call it more like a loud buzzing noise not whirring. Put my hand on the starter and it feels like its spinning with the engine running.

Your right. The starter gear should be retracted and not in contact with the clutch basket gear unless you are pushing the start button.

I pulled the starter again. Im able to push that jack gear in another 1/4 inch before it bottoms out. When I release it , it springs forward to the original location.

I thought I can put power to the starter to see if I hear the noise but all I can get it to so is pop that gear out even further.

Might have figured it out. I had 2 of the steel ***** installed. Apparently the new starter clutch came with one in there already!! Gear pushes all the way in now but I have to go to work so I wont know till tomorrow morning if its solved.

There's a 2nd o ring inside . It's either that O ring or the starter clutch itself. The oil gets all the way into the starter and leaks through that little hole on the bottom.
