Adjust the cable now to 1/8 free play then see if it stays at that setting after squeezing it

You say you haven't touched the adjustment at the handle? I thought that cable had to be completely slack to adjust the clutch basket. Without going to check my book I think I remember that if that cable is not completely slack you cannot get and accurate adjustment at the basket.

That's the first step in adjusting the clutch........

Then I would follow Big Dave's advice... to make sure the ***** are seated in the ramp...
