Friend has a 2000 RK and wants to change to gear drive cams. Question is he doesn't want to change cams ,just wants to change to gears. Is this possible . Can I just use gears on his stock cams?
I've done the cams, lifters and cam bearings on my 96 in. but not sure if I can do what he wants.
I know i'll probably get the " as long as your in there you should " but this is his decision, not mine.Although I'll make suggestions Bike has 30k so not used much but in excellent shape.
Why go to the expense and not swap the cams? To each his own. I'm fairly certain that you have to have cams built for gear drive vs, chain drive. But then the gears are replaceable if needed, which is likely why you have seen replacement gear kits.
Kinda gonna answer my own question, After looking at the stock 96 cams , the gear is pressed on an the replacement gears I seen are keyed.
I was just going to replace the chain followers but he asked about changing to gear drive is why the question came up.
Chain drive cams rotate the same direction, and gear drive cams go opposite directions, so no. You would have to have a set of blanks ground to your current cams specs, but made for gears.
