I wear a Shoei JB Crusier 3/4 helmet with the H-D Sena 30K headset and in helmet speakers. I'm hard of hearing and wear hearingaids that I must take out while riding...they just make everything NOISE, so the fairing speakers are of no use to me. With the 3/4 I can hear my tunes, phone, Nav commands, CB and intercom very well, yet I can hear my pipes (muffled some) and outside sounds like car horns. This is like a person with good hearing wearing quality ear plugs.

I also have a half helmet that I use occasionally but the wind/road/engine and muffler noise is significantly louder even without my hearing aids. The half helmet also has a sena headset that I can use to Bluetooth to my phone and I can hear that fairly well, but nothing as well as the 3/4 helmet (with the shield dowm, of course).

Good quality headset speakers in a good quality 3/4 or FF helmet is the best way to go, IMHO.

On topic: Earplugs work the best with or without a helmet.
Last thing I want is to be distracted by radio chatter or music when I'm riding-then again, I'm not riding on a godforsaken slab in the middle of nowhere for hours on end. FF helmet, earplugs, and trying to avoid getting whacked by drunks, blind people, and distracted drivers is more than enough diversion for me when I ride. If I want to listen to beautiful music, I take the F150 with the premium sound system.

Just curious, how long ago was that? I've been active for 24 years now and we've always been allowed to wear any helmet as long as it was DOT. Been in Norfolk the whole time.

Edit: oops, 22 years. Have retirement on my mind!

I have always been able to hear the radio just fine in a full face. Although, I've never had the stock radio and speakers for very long with my last two EG'S

I wear a full helmet, no chin bar. I guess that's a 3/4 now. It reduces all noise. I turn up my radio two or three notches. All is well. And my ears are not ringing as bad after a long ride.

1/2 and beanie helmet were not allowed when I was active duty. But I've been retired for 20 years.

And all the PPE requirements.

stumbled across this thread ....went on a 150+ mile ride today in our "beautiful" Michigan weather. I wear a half helmet during the summer/warm weather. I have an HJC 3/4 I wear in spring/fall cooler weather. I wore the 3/4 today, had the radio going and had no issues hearing. I could hear the road, the bike, the music.... no issues. And this is from someone who spent 8 years on an M110 8" Artillery piece, with **** hearing and I wear hearing aids (except when riding and shooting). I had no issues to hear, the helmet kept the wind noise to a minimum, and was comfortable. I am happy with mine. I can hear external noises while keeping the wind noise at bay. My input....others will tell me I don't know or I am f'd up, but 50+ years of riding experience has kept me satisfied.
