Default How much would leak...?

From the starter? I am going to try to pull it today to see it that is where I am getting my leak (as it seems like it is from there) but how much oil would leak from there?

The starter is at the top of the primary so when you pull it there won’t be oil pouring out. Any oil will be residual and you’ll be able to see the condition of the o-ring. If the o-ring was bad, oil can seep out as it splashes inside.

Well, that’s what I am wondering then. How much would “seep” out? I seem to have an abundance of oil (I can’t get a good picture of it) coming from somewhere in that area.

I am am just trying to get a game plan of attack before I start taking things off.

Thanks

Like the other guy said if the o ring is bad it will leak. You spend more time asking questions on the computer t it takes to pull the starter and check it.

What's with the rude put-down? How is that gonna help him or anyone else that might be looking for information?

Clean things up. Even a brush and heavy mix of dish detergent will work. Then short drives to spot leak. My guess is only reason starter would leak is it has been off and someone did not tighten it up correctly.

Oil can get thru smaller places then you can see. So pullings starter and other covers and such is a shot in the dark unless you know where oil is coming from.

Is this on your 07? Has the inner primary ever been off? As Rip said, you need to diagnose where to figure out where it’s coming from. That said, usual suspects are the inner primary bearing oil seal, shift shaft seal, starter o-ring, mainshaft seal(s). Most times when folks pull an inner primary in your case, they check everything over and replace all the seals for insurance.

I would say there is very little chance it’s the starter. The number one place for a leak in that area would be the inner primary bearing seal. Where the trans shaft goes through the back of the inner primary. After that it would be the shift shaft seal on the trans or the trans main shaft seal. After that I would suspect gaskets. The starter is so high up it really doesn’t get that much oil on it.

I am the 3rd owner of it.
The original owner only put like 15k on it and only had it serviced...fluids and filters.
The 2nd owner bought it ALL STOCK and put another 15k on it. He took it to a local Indy mechanic and did whatever that guy recommended.
Yhe inner must have been off sometime as it has a different drive belt.

I was was asking because I was just trying to figure out a good starting point.

I have tried to clean it and will spend some more time on it today. Then I will try the foot powder/baby powder trick to see if I can find it.

Thank you you guys for your input. I will update with what I find so that perhaps it can help someone out in the future.

Were it me, I’d buy the inner primary gasket kit which includes everything you need to pull the inner primary. While taking it down, I’d check the status of the comp, chain tensioner, shift shaft seal, IPB, race and mainshaft seal and replace as necessary. Especially since you’re the third owner you can get a better look at everything inside if you’ve never been in it.
