Adding 20w shock oil to air shocks?
#12
Thanks for all the replies guys, when I first started thinking about this I had already installed a pair of HD 12” hand adjustables. Mine were the 13” on a 2011 Ultra classic ( and I still have them ) Would it be better to stay with the adjustable shocks or change the fluid and put the OEM’s back on? I’m 6” 140Lbs normally ride solo but sometimes the Ol’Lady will ride and she is 5’11 and about 120lbs. Thanks

If I remember correctly, I went with 20 wt and the ride is firm. In MY opinion, firm is far better than bottoming out and even max allowed air in the shocks didn't stop that completely but don't remember any bottoming after the change to 20 wt. The method I used to get the old oil out was to remove the air tubes and valve from the bike and reconnect it to the shocks. Charge the shocks with some air, turn them upside down and remove the air hose. This works well but is messy, oil sprays all over, then the syringe or pump oiler works to refill the shocks. I had to stop about every 10 pump strokes to let the air out or I couldn't get any more oil in.

Wow asking about my lovely wife’s weight is going down a road that is full of danger. Lol
anyway together about 400 pounds and I am the majority. The 15wt lets the shocks work and we rarely bottom out. The ride is markedly better than stock. Here we are riding the Dragon earlier this year.

Cobra 1 and everyone else thanks. I’m gonna try and get this done this week, my Ol’Lady had foot surgery Friday and I took this coming week off. Cobra 1 did you get your oil on line or at a auto store and also did you get Belray Suspension oil 15w or the Racing suspension oil? How much did you measure and put in? Anybody that’s done this please post, all the information I get is greatly appreciated. Never did a shock anything before, hope I don’t screw this up.
