Default Engine Oil

I have a 2000 FLHT Electraglide with 26,000 miles on it. Runs strong with no problems so far. I run Amsoil 20-50W and change every 4,000 miles. I recently changed my oil and filter and have about 600 miles on the new oil. I slightly overfilled and drained a few oz. out and noticed the oil was already Black. Is this from a dirty(carbon buildup maybe) engine? I know with several thousand miles that the oil will turn much darker but to be literally black so soon worries me. Any thoughts??....drifterfcrc

Also take into account when changing your oil you don't get every drop out so there is still old black oil in there.

I would go with HD or mobil one instead. My opinion only.

You have about 24 ounces of old oil left in the engine after draining, so it is not uncommon to have the new oil look a bit black.

Here's an option https://www.hdforums.com/m_95119/tm.htm

I've got 40K on my Electriglide Ultra with NO engine problems and NO oil consumption between changes. The oil: Amzoil 20-50. My friends using other oils are adding every morning on a long trip........

Most everyone on here is using some sort of synthetic oil. THe brand does not really matter. The natural oils will break down over time and lose the viscosity it had when new. The synthetic oils do not break down. The fact that your oil get's dirty is just a sign of two things, 1) There is always some old oil left in the oil system that you don't get out, thus the reason for changing the oil filter too. 2) The oil is doing it's job by removing the dirt from your engine. If the oil were to stay clean, then that dirt would have to go somewhere and that somewhere would be your drivetrain parts in the engine i.e. valves, pistons, etc...
Your on a great program for preventative maintenance...stick to it. I use the Harley oil, but I am thinking about switching to the Mobil 1 V-Twin Synthetic as it is 100% synthetic and not a blend.

Good luck and ride safe.

Could be not all old oil was removed, some stays in after change. If your changing every 4,000 you should not have any problems. I have 05 FLHTCI and change every 2,000, have 11,000 on bike, no problems here.
