Default Top end ringing after new cams/lifters/ROCKOUTS...

2002 Twin Cam 88
I installed:
  • 2007+ cam plate and oil pump
  • Andrews 21n conversion cams
  • v thunder lifters
  • ROCKOUTS
Reused the stock pushrods. As soon as I got it running there was a bad ringing sound coming from the top end. The oil pressure went up like normal.

Not sure what the ringing is but that taping almost sounds like an exhaust or head gasket leak or worse a valve that is being hammered by the piston for being open when it comes up.

Sounds like valves hanging open. Could be lifter pump up or you need adjustable push rods if cams were installed and indexed properly. With stock pushrods you should be able to rotate pushrod with piston at top dead center. Always hard to determine a problem from a video.

It may be time to pull the heads off and inspect.

Well, it sounds like a leak at the head gasket or base gasket if a stud was pulled .
I had an experience with my 89 FLHTC after doing some 10:1 pistons years ago and the monkey I mean the wrench over torqued the studs pulling two loose.
Well, to be fair the late 80's had issues with some cases being porous when they where cast...
Take it back apart by reverse assembly and cross ref. with the correct procedure via a shop manual.
You'll find the solution to the noise you hear.

See if you can make the noise change by pressing on the pushrod tubes.

Thanks BTW

What would that tell me? I don't want to run it much more than I have to before I figure out what's wrong.

Also, someone asked me which cylinder had to be on TDC when I aligned the sprockets. I don't see anything in the service manual about that. Does it matter where either of the pistons is at when lining up all the marks on the cams and sprockets?

Me thinks it does matter, but I have to dig out the book.
When the correct cylinder is at TDC the push rod in question should be able to turn freely.
Also, it might be something as simple as a gasket being miss aligned and not the doom and gloom I experienced in my earlier post.
You Tube has some good videos where they talk about base circle and what it means.
Keep us posted, youll figure it out.

It can tell you if the pushrods are rubbing inside the tubes.... You can also take the clips out & drop the tubes. A little oil will run out while running but not a flood.

Always best to start with the easy stuff.
