I don't think you are referring to HD Factory Service Manual ... because The DOT markings on that particular 28-spoke "Knuckles" FRONT are on the RIGHT Side (although some HD wheels use the DOT Markings to indicate the LEFT side)

"does it really make a such a difference?" .... Well, you are a perfect example of how it does "make a difference" on these Asymmetric wheels... Had you followed the correct instructions, you would have never come back with a problem.

Actually the HD 2009 Touring Service Manual that I have doesn't even make reference to the 28-Spoke "Knuckles" at all, it only references what would be the Laced Spoke and Airstrike Wheel.

HD has Instructions available for those Specific 28-Spoke "Knuckles" Front Wheels

So... if you would followed the correct instructions, you would have "Bottomed" the first bearing in the LEFT-SHALLOW side and then inserted the center spacer and pressed the second bearing in the RIGHT-DEEP side until it contacted the spacer sleeve and you would had NONE of this Drama.

BTW, Here is some "Light" reading for the nights you can't get to sleep CLICK HERE ... Recognize your wheel in there?
.

I'd listen to this guy^^^^^^. It'll save you a lot of time.

Additionally, you'll do well to install these:

Amazon Amazon

The 28 spoke Knuckles use the 11.3 mm version. It makes checking the air pressure a lot easier.

If yo ever get bored of the looks, startinf next to the airvalve, cut every 7th spoke out . Blend the husb and wheel side, powder coat or plate to your liking. You’ll have a custom wheel and one that is easier to air up.

Default The depth of the pulley bearing race isn't deep enough

I didn’t press my pulley bearings so I don’t have any other details.
for 2 bearings on the pulley I got. It's shallow by about 3 mm. It's not the one off my bike but it came off a touring bike. I guess I'll have to either use my old one that will come off the bike, or get a new one.

When it's all put together, get yourself some angled valve stems. Those wheels are a PITA to air up.

I've already got 2 different types to choose from, and will probably only put one on the front. The rear valve is in the right side of the wheel, just like most of the front valves are so it should be an easy access. I laughed when I saw the location of the rear. It's as if the moco actually listened to use about the poor engineering. But then they put the front tire valve right in the centre 'tightly' between the spokes. Go figure.
You guys have been a real help, thanks.
