You can get speaker pockets that allow headset install into most half helmets.

You might even see if Sena offers something similar.

1) Buy them as a pair, not individual units. They will be paired by default and simplify step 6 below.
2) Download Sena's app for your iPhone or Android device, many settings can be changed via the app
3) Read the manual, kept it or a digital copy with your for reference.
4) Watch Sena's videos
5) Search youtube for other use videos, lots of tips/reviews/etc there. Take all advice, just like this reply, with a grain of salt.
6) Embrace that you'll do factory resets many times in your lifetime of ownership. Memorize how to do this reset, pair your phone, etc.
7) Practice using them in sitting in your house before you mount up on the bike. Very frustrating to try and get something to work and ride at the same time.
8) Re-read the manual after you've been using them for a few hours, some things will be clearer.
Note: If you have a bike with the BOOM! audio system you will not be able to get audio into the headset without adding the HD WHIM, Sena Freewire, or other pieces. If you go with the HD WHIM unit you will only get mono from the BOOM! to the Sena 30k units.

I installed a Sena unit and speakers on my full face helmet. I love the GPS navigation and streaming (Pandora) music. Phone calls are crystal clear. Not sure how clear you'd sound with a boom mic on a half helmet, if that's your plan.
VA Larry offers some good tips, especially the one to practice at home.

If you are looking for half helmet setup, for a little more you can get the Sena Cavalry Helmet. All integrated, and ready to go. I use a Sena 20s on my full face, and I got a pair Cavalry's for my wife and me. It is plenty loud, and we can talk to each other and listen to music at same time.

Yes, buy them in a pair. Also, check to see if there is a earphone jack the speakers plug into. I use a half helmet and use inner ear phones. The sound is superior, wind noise is non-existent and I can still hear everything around me as long as I don't turn the volume up too high. I am using an Sena 20S.
