Default should I do my 1000 mile service at 800 miles?

It's nearing the end of October here in NY. There's a chance that I may not reach 1000 miles on my new 05 RK before the winter months. I intend to ride during the winter, but of course that's if the weather cooperates.

Do you think I should bring the bike in early for the 1000 mile service?

Or should I leave that oil in the bike all winter?

I only have 800 miles.

Thanks

I was in the same situation, so I took mine in at 866 I didn't want the old oil sitting in the engine over the winter If you look at the thread on putting your bike away for the winter they suggest you change the oil first since acids in the old oil will eat at the bearings and other metals So if I were you I would get it done now I did JMHO

I would go ahead and have it done at 800 miles. It won't hurt a thing to be 200 miles early. I would not leave it all winter with the old oil in it. That is oil that was in it for the break in and it will have some crap in it.

As far as doing it yourself, I wouldn't on the 1,000 mile. If I'm not mistaken, you need to have a dealership do the 1,000 mile for warranty concerns.

Hope this helps.

I have an '06 Street Glide and I was only able to get 800 miles on it before I left for my summer trip. I went ahead and had the dealer do the 1K service before I left. It sure won't hurt anything and all it really means is that the rest of your oil changes will be 200 miles sooner in sequence.

Bill mentioned having the dealer do the service for warranty issues. If you read the manual or talk to most dealers, they will tell you the same thing but every once in awhile someone on this board will say that isn't necessary and they've got me wondering. The tech at my dealer found two problems I may have missed so it was well worth the money for me.

I agree with Bill,

Get it done now and let the dealer do it. They will go over alot of stuff during the 1000 check.

I took mine in at about 600 miles..
Reason: It developed a leak in the seal that was missassembled for the shifter linkage. Nice.
So it wasn't too big a deal.. I broke it in already and I'm sure it didn't hurt it.

And I also agree due to the acids and contaminants.. Don't let it sit on old oil all winter.

I was in the same situation at the end of '02, so I put every coat I owned on, as well as a couple of pairs of gloves, longjohns, etc, and rode out the last 270 miles. It was about 28 degrees and I still loved it.

Then I went a few more miles and had the 95 kit put in, sort of negating all my hard work.... I'm not the brightest bulb in the box sometimes...

Why not do your own oil change?

Get the service done at the dealer. They go over the bike nose to tail and check almost everything on it. You spent a lot of hard earned money. You've seen the rust bucket's on the road in NY from people that try to save money and do the servie work themselves. I am a firm believer in letting the professionals at the dealers do the work. I have all my vehicles serviced at the dealers and I sleep better doing that.

As far as riding in NY in the winter. Be very careful about riding after it's been snowing and they have salted the roads. I rode new years day here in memphis and got caught in the rain on the way home, and the salt spray rusted my brakes and ruined all three rotors. If you ride the scoot during the winter...wash the bike before you put it away.

I ride all year long, but now I am very careful about washing it after the snow.

Good luck.
