If you have a stock tensioner then there are 3 revisions of the auto tensioner out. You probably have one of the first 2 but would have to physically check to be certain.
For 85 - 06 models:
40063-05 first released 2005-05-18
40063-05A first released 2006-11-13
40063-05B first released 2010-01-25

Spring loaded cam tensioners on your softail, 39954-99 & 39964-99A.
Hydraulic tensioners only came stock on the 2006 dyna models.
You can use a conversion kit to eliminate the spring loaded tensioners.

2006 only had one hydraulic tensioner. It was 2007 that the whole cam chest was upgraded, which included two hydraulic tensioners and the new cam shoe material. They should have upgraded the shoes in 2000, as they already new of the problems caused by the weak material on the shoes. Anybody upgrading a 1999-2006 should simply upgrade to the 2007 complete cam chest.

That's OK, good information to know. When I did my chrome inner primary and SE comp I put in the 40063-05B chain tensioner. My original was bowed from the force of the spring in it. I would recommend the latest chain tensioner version if anyone does any primary work on the auto chain tensioner bikes.

You don't know what you're talking about. Please refrain from helping people with subjects/jobs you're not familiar with.

OP, you have two spring loaded cam chain tensioners. They should be changed asap.

Just looked at some illustrations on the cam chest which included the cam chain shoes. Why would HD put a hydraulic shoe and a spring shoe in a cam chest? Anyone?

They didn't.... the twin cam engines come OEM with either two spring loaded cam tensioners (with link chains) or two hydraulic cam tensioners (with roller chains).... depends on year/engine for which type you will have
