Default Walkie Talkies

Anybody out there ever use walkie talkies on a road trip. Yeah I know if I had an Ultra I would have the CB but I dont. Just thinking how to keep in touch if we were to get seperated. My brother doesnt believe in cell phones.

Dunno that they'd do you much good, since they usually have a range of MUCH less than 1/2 mile. Buy one of them "pay as you go" phones, and make him carry it when yer on the road with him....

Never while ON my bike ( to dangerous ) but ALWAYS when on a road trip we either use our NEXTEL's or the little motorola 2 -way radios. Took the 2-way radios to the Bahamas and to Mexico to communicate when separated either at the beach or in BARS. Worked great. I actually had EXCELLENT NEXTEL direct connect service in Cozumel Mexico 2 months ago. I Beeped my dad and he thought I must've come home early cause the reception was so good!!!
Get the 2 way radios, much better than a CB in my opinion

I've been looking at this too. The range on some of these walkie talkies is close to 20 miles. I thought about getting these after our last motorcycle vacation in AZ in March. We kept getting separated and if the wives on the back had walkie talkies they could have kept in touch. I think I'll get them before the next MC vacation.

So have you done any research, what do you think the best bang for the buck might be?

Check J&M. The've got some that can be used on or off the bike and all the goodies to go with them.

No, haven't done a lot of research yet, just looking at them in stores when I see them. I won't need them till next year, so I'm holding off. But like I was saying, the range on them is pretty good(at least that's what they say) and better than I was expecting. They would have been awesome to have had last March in AZ.

This range that they put on the radios is nothing but propaganda! They only have rabge like that in a therocial vaccum of space were radio waves propagte forever with no degradation....

What you need to look for is the wattage of the radio...If it's 2 watts you might get 2 miles line of sight out of it; on flat land in perfect weather, etc....If your in the mountains 1/2 mile probably....

I have a Chatterbox CB. It can be used as a handheld portable or wired to the bike's battery. At best I get 1/2 mile on the road. CB's are what my club uses but I would go with FRS if I had my choice. Cheaper and better reception/transmission. I've been five mountains over and able to communicate well with another radio. All radio transmission is line-of-site so anything like trees, houses, cars can break up the transmission.

Thats kind of what I'm looking at FRS/GMRS radios. I understand you need a FCC permit to use GMRS so I would never use that.
