Default Neutral light of when in N, but on when in gear

I have an '03 Ultra. Bought it used. Light comes on 1-6th... but off when actually in Neutral. I assume something is just flipped. Thoughts?

Bad neutral switch, or it’s wired wrong. . Get a factory service manual, to make sure it’s wired properly. Don’t even think about buying a non HD manual, or we’ll slap you up side the head.

The connections can be attached either way. There is not a right or wrong way to connect at the switch. If there is a wiring issue it's most likely at the source (by the dash light prob) or along the way......although I think that's unlikely, but certainly possible. It seems to be just the switch. You can always test it with a paperclip and connect the two leads. If the neutral light comes on then the switch is bad. My only concern from your post is that you state that it's coming on in other gears but not neutral. Usually you will get no neutral light at all when the switch is bad which is why you do the clip test to make sure the switch is the culprit and not a power problem. Agree with the others get a manual to explain it all.

You might have the wrong switch for the year. When I did a baker shift kit I had to find one that was opposite of mine. Went to dealer and tried a couple before finding one that was normaly closed or open , can't remember which. So pull yours find if it's normal open or closed , then get the opposite.

Unless you have a Baker transmission someone probably replaced the switch with the wrong one part. You can check continuity across the switch terminals with most multi-meter to see what you have, always on or always off. Check the stock switch at the dealer to see if it is the opposite of what you have. The dealer most likely will not be able to tell you the part number of the switch that is opposite of the stock switch but if you call Baker they have the Harley part number.

I rebuilt the trans with the baker master rebuild kit. Shift drum is part of it , that's called a shift kit. OP mentioned six speed for a 5 speed year so he most likely has baker 6 which comes with shift drum too. So mine is fine now and mentioned it to help OP.

Here is the part Number for the Neutral Indicator Switch I used with a Baker DD6 in my sons 06 RK. It is the opposite of the stock switch.

The stock part number for your 03 bike is 33904-00A The same as my son's 06 RK. The switch is only about $14

Today i finished installing a Baker OD6 on my 2000 Dyna. I had same issue: Neutral light on when in gear and off when in neutral...
I had to change my neutral switch from my OEM 5-speed 33902-98A to the newer version 2001-up 33904-00A.
The 33904-00A is a "gear open" version that works the opposite of the 33902-98A.

See this video from Baker:

Default 2008 street glide

I got a 08 street glide and the trans broke. My buddy gave me the guts for it complete so I just slid it in. The neutral light now come on when I’m in 3rd gear and not in neutral. Any thoughts

Don't do anything with it. This way when the neutral light is off you'll know you're in neutral, and when it's lit you'll know you're in gear. Just think in reverse.
