What did the dealer do to diagnose this as a transmission failure? The IPB has to be replaced when pulling the transmission.

The tech diagnosed it from what he heard while the bike was running.

Update
  1. Replaced the tensioner with a new Hayden brand. The old tensioner was pretty bad.
  2. The noise is quieter, but it still rattles a bit in 1st with the clutch fully engaged and louder while in neutral. Noise persists in all gears. (somewhat quieter in taller gears)
  3. During Primary Oil removal, the plug was covered in silver/glittery oil.

Thank you all again for your help.

Drew

Who did the work, the dealer, the mom and pop, or you?

You originally mentioned the IPB and trans bearing. Do you know if they were changed?
Do you know if the run-out was checked?
If so, what was it?
.

I did the work on the tensioner. No other work has been done on the motorcycle. The bearing change was suggested by the dealer who was doing recall service on my bike. ( they based their suggestion on what they heard while the engine was running) I do not know if the bearings have been changed by the previous owner or if they are originals. ( more than likely they are originals) The run out was not checked.

The run out was not checked by the dealer, however the Primary oil was glittery. Considering I have really rough startups sometimes (rattle/bang) I’m wondering if my compensator needs replacement. Bearings too?

Things are are getting more and more expensive. (Happy Birthday to me.)

Sure it's not the compensator?

That’s what I’m tying to figure out. I’d hate to do a IPB job and then realize it was the comp. or vice versa. 🤷*♂️

Tear it down and look at it if the ipb is fine then leave it it's the same process for either one either way the inner primary has to come off. I am willing to bet the ipb race is all chewed up and that's where the silver glitter came from. If it is make sure you clean that silver stuff out of the main clutch bearing or it will eat that up too.

It is not that expensive. I had a shifter shaft seal leaking. I figured while I had to remove the inner primary, I might as well rebuild it.
You can buy everything you need from Baker. Look in your manual you will need some special tools to do this.
There are you tube vids for reference.....
If you are not comfortable doing this I would look for a good Indy in your area.
